Introduction To Lóngshū‘s Pure Land Text

In the year 1881, at the age of 20, years before he became a ‘Great Master’, the later Pure Land Tradition’s 13th Patriarch Great Master Yìnguāng (净土宗十三祖印光大师) was assisting in the sunning of sūtra books (晒经) in Liánhuā (i.e. Lotus Flower) Monastery (莲花寺) when he encountered a damaged and incomplete copy of Lóngshū‘s Pure Land Text《龙舒净土文》. (The author is a famous layman who departed for Pure Land while standing, as above.) His eyes brightened up with interest as he read it. Although already with interest in the Pure Land teachings, this book, which he remarked to be amazing and suitable for beginners, inspired him to resolutely vow to reach Pure Land. In time to come, he even wrote verses and a preface to promote republication of the recompiled book. (This book was also praised by the Pure Land Tradition’s 8th Patriarch Great Master Liánchí (净土宗八祖莲池大师) and many others.)
