劝孝子
[9] Encouragement [For] Filial Children
长芦赜禅师作《劝孝文》百二十篇，前百篇言奉养甘旨，为世间之孝；后二十篇言劝父母修净土，为出世间之孝。
Chán Master Chánglú Zé wrote ‘Encouragement [Of] Filiality’s Text’ [with one] hundred [and] twenty essays, [with the] earlier hundred essays speaking [of] serving [and] supporting [with] tasty delicacies, as filiality of [the] worldly. [The] later twenty essays speak [of] encouraging fathers [and] mothers [to] cultivate [the] Pure Land [path], as filiality of world-transcendence.
盖世间之孝，一世而止，犹为孝之小者；出世间之孝，无时而尽，以父母生净土，福寿不止如恒河沙劫，此莫大之孝也。
[That] covering filiality of [the] worldly, [is for] one lifetime then ending, still as that small of filiality. [That] filiality of world-transcendence, [is] without time then ending, with fathers [and] mothers born [in the] Pure Land, [with] blessings [and] lifespans unending like [the] Ganges River’s sands [of] kalpas, this [is] filiality that [has] nothing greater.
父母存而不能以此劝勉，他日徒伤其心，徒为厚礼，亦何益乎？
[With our] fathers [and] mothers existing, yet not able [to be] with this encouraging [and] advising, [on] another day only [with] grieving [of] that heart, in vain supporting [with] generous gifts, [this has] what benefit?
若又能转以化人，使更相劝化，以此功德资父母之福寿，厚父母之善报，佛不阻众生之愿，此意必可遂矣。
If again able [to in] turn with [this] transform people, enabling even more [to] encourage [and] transform one another, with these meritorious virtues supporting [the] blessings [and] lifespans of fathers [and] mothers, thickening [the] good rewards of fathers [and] mothers, [the] Buddha [will] not obstruct [the] aspirations of sentient beings, [with] this wish [that] can [be] satisfied.
上品上生者，先言「孝养父母」。若能推是心以为孝养，其往生品第可见矣。
Those [of the] High Grade’s High Birth, first speak [of] ‘filial support [of] father [and] mother.’ If able [to] extend this mind, with [it] for filial support, their rebirths’ grades can [be] seen.
[原眉批：子到英年亲白头，风光虽好夕阳流。肥甘供养孝犹浅，要劝双亲净业修。]
[Original headnotes: (When) children approach (their) prime years, (their) parents (will have) white heads. (With the) scenery although beautiful, (the) setting sun passes quickly. (With) fat (and) sweet (foods) making offerings, filiality (is) still shallow, (there) must (be) encouraging (of) both parents (to have) pure karmas’ cultivation.]
