[7] Encouragement [For] Those Rich
Those rich should personally [be] mindful, saying, ‘My this life’s wealth [and] abundance, [are] all due [to that in] past lives cultivated [and] planted.’ For example, of that grain [in] this year eaten, [it is] thus that [from] last year planted.
Certainly, [of] human life’s clothing [and] food, wealth [and] official salary, [the] netherworld [for] all have fixed quantities. Slowly earning a living, of quantities reasonable [to] have, [they will] also naturally come.
Of that coming later, thus can [they] lengthen [their] lifespans, like water shallower flowing then longer. If hurriedly [with] greed seeking, [they are] also only [with] these quantities.
[Of] quantities beyond getting them, then [will] misfortune come and go, like water overly full then overflowing. [There] should [be] according [to one’s] part making [a] living, without causing fullness [and] overflowing.
[With] less harming, helping people, with [this] preventing fullness [and] overflowing, not only can [one] enjoy [the] peace of [this] present life, [this] also can plant blessings of [the] future.
[There] still should [be] mindfulness [that] worldly blessings also have exhaustion. If with dedication [to the] Western [Pure Land], then [will they be] inexhaustible.
Moreover, [with] worldly wealth [and] abundance, [they are] also not able [to have] all kinds [of things] as wished. Only retaining mindfulness [of the] Western [Pure Land], then personally having [what] can [be] joyful.
One after another, printing [and] giving [the] Western [Pure Land’s] words, with [them] widely encouraging people, enabling even more [to] encourage [and] transform one another, [with] this as planting of endless blessings. [In this] present life, [this] can eliminate disasters [and] avert difficulties. Ghosts [and] gods [will] also respect and bless them. After death, definitely [with the] High Grade’s High Birth.
[Original headnotes: (When the) time (of) death comes, once (with) both hands empty, what (is) that (which can) follow, obtained (to) go? Only having those created good karmas still closely following oneself, thus saying, ‘Accumulating wealth is not as good as accumulating virtues.’ (There) should (be) with objects external of oneself widely planting blessings’ fields, dedicating (for birth in the) Pure Land.
I once (heard there) is (a) verse, (which) says,
‘Since ancient (times), where (are those) powerful (and) rich, (who) accumulated jade (and) piled gold, (for) how long (a) time? Observing attentively, (seeing) through (the) sky’s flowers, (and) diligently protecting (the) Dharma, then as Bodhisattvas (with) warm-heartedness.’]
