劝恶口者
[34] Encouragement [For] Those [With] Evil Speech
身口意谓之三业。藏经所言,果报多因口业者,以口易发也。
[Of the] body, speech [and] mind, these [are] called [the] three karmas. That [the] Treasury [Of] Sūtras say, those [karmic] fruits’ results [are with] many causes [from] verbal karmas, with speech easily arising.
云昔有人恨其母送饭来迟,乃云:「生于母腹,不如生于鹿腹。」后果托生于鹿腹中。
[It is] said [that in the] past, [there] was [a] person [who] hated his mother [for] sending food [that] came late, thus saying, ‘[Being] born from [my] mother’s belly, [is] not as good as [being] born from [a] deer’s belly.’ [His] later fruit [was to be] conceived [and] born from [a] deer’s belly within.
又有人以食与之,若不如意,则云:「不如与狗。」后乃生为狗头。是皆口业果报也。
Again, [there] was [a] person with eating [of] that given, only then not [with that] as wished, then saying, ‘It would be better [to] give [this to a] dog.’ Later, [he was] thus born as [a] dog. These [are] all verbal karmas’ fruits’ results.
所谓恶口者,乃恶怒之口,唯言语不温和耳。今人所谓恶口,直为秽语矣。
That so-called evil [i.e. harsh; malicious; vicious] speech, [is] thus [the] speech of hatred [and] anger, only [having] speech [that is] not gentle [and] harmonious. Nowadays, that people call evil speech, is directly defiled [i.e. obscene] speech.
恶口果报,固已不佳;若秽语,则地狱、畜生之报也。世人多不知此,乃以恶口秽语为常。
[Of] evil speech’s [karmic] fruits’ results, [those] strong already [are] not good. If [with] defiled speech, then [with the] retribution of hell-beings [and] animals. [The] world’s people [are with] many not knowing this, thus with evil speech [and] defiled speech as [those] common.
奉劝世人力以戒此,常念阿弥陀佛,以洗涤口业之秽恶;闻人恶口秽语,亦常念此佛名,以洗涤耳根之秽恶。
May [I] offer advice [to the] world’s people, [to] make [the] effort, so as to abstain [from] these, [to] constantly [have] mindfulness [of] Āmítuófó [i.e. Amitā(bha) Buddha], with [this] washing [off] verbal karmas’ filth. Hearing people [with] evil speech [and] defiled speech, likewise constantly [having] mindfulness [of] this Buddha’s name, with [this] washing [off the] filth of [the] ear root.
愿以此生念佛之善业,洗涤累世以来之秽恶,如此则善念日熟,恶业日消。
May [you] with this life’s good karmas of mindfulness [of] Buddha, wash [off the] filth of continued lifetimes since. Like this, then [with] good thoughts [by the] day matured, [and with] evil karmas [by the] day eliminated.
又能转以劝人,使更相劝化,则灾难可消,福禄可永,身后必于净土中上品生矣。
Again, [if] able [to], with [this in] turn encourage people, enabling even more [to] encourage [and] transform one another, then can disasters [and] difficulties [be] eliminated, can blessings [and] positions [be] perpetuated, after death definitely within [the] Pure Land’s High Grades [be] born.
[原眉批:昔俞净意语言敏妙,舌锋所及,怒触鬼神。其后改过行善,将因果报应之言逢人化导,于是转祸化福。多秽语者,当学俞公,更能时常念佛,则口业自然清净矣。]
[Original headnotes: (In the) past, Yú Jìngyì’s speech (was) forthright (and) clever, (with his) tongue incisive (with) that reached, angering (and) moving ghosts (and) gods. He later corrected (his) faults (and) practised good, using words of causes (and) effects’ (karmic) retribution (and rewards, with) encountered people transforming (and) guiding (them), thereupon transforming misfortune (and) manifesting blessings. Those (with) much defiled speech, should learn (from) Yú Gōng, even able (to) often (be) mindful (of the) Buddha, then (with) verbal karmas naturally purified.]
