[512] Why Say Support-Chanting When Approaching Life’s End’s Benefits Are Extremely Great? 为什么说临终助念利益甚大?

凡有平素念佛之人,或其人之子孙信佛,于临命终时,请众居士助念,其利益甚大。看看《饬终津梁》自知。

[For] all those people [who] usually recite [Āmítuó]fó[’s (阿弥陀佛) name], perhaps [with] these people’s children [and] grandchildren, who [have] faith [in] Buddhism, when approaching [their] lives’ end, [they should] invite many laypersons [for] support-chanting, [as] its benefits [are] extremely great. Take a look at Bridge [With] Admonitions [For The] End [to] personally know [them].

念佛人,于自己父母,及余眷属前,常须说与彼听。迨及有命终人,自家眷属,通为念佛,此人必能仗佛力生西方。纵不生西方,亦必生善道,有大利益,毫无损伤。

People mindful [of the] Buddha, for their fathers [and] mothers, and before other family members, must constantly speak [of this] for them [to] hear. Until reaching [when there] are people [at] life’s end, [with one’s] own family members, all for [them] reciting [Āmítuó]fó’s [name], these people [are] definitely able [to] rely [on the] Buddha’s power [to be] born [in his] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss (极乐世界)]. Even if not born [in the] Western [Pure Land, they] also will [be] born [in] good paths, [to] have great benefits, not in the least harmed.

若不知此,未死即为洗澡,换衣,若因搬动疼痛,则起嗔心。即不至起嗔,然一经搬动,心便不得清净矣。

If not knowing this, yet [to] die, then for [them] bathing [and] changing clothes, if because [of] moving [and] touching painful, [these] then give rise [to the] angry mind. Even if not going so far [to] give rise [to] anger, however, once going through moving [and] touching, [their] minds then [do] not attain purity.

倘平素念佛求生西方之人,一经如此,定规打失正念,不得往生。

If [there are] people who usually recite [Āmítuó]fó’s [name to] seek birth [in the] West[ern Pure Land], once going through [disturbances] like these, [they will] definitely lose Right Mindfulness, [and] not attain rebirth [in Pure Land].

若未死先哭,则令彼生爱恋心,亦是牵令堕落耳。

If yet [to] die, first crying, then causing those [people to] give rise [to] deep attachment’s mind, [this] also is pulling [to] cause falling.

临终一关,要紧之极,固宜为之助念。

Approaching [life’s] end, [at this] one pass, that [is] extremely important, [there] certainly should [be] for those [people practising] support-chanting.

助念之人,必须熟阅《饬终津梁》,使其家儿女眷属,通依助念人之指示,庶可不至因孝心,而致亲反受堕落之苦耳。

Those people support-chanting, must carefully read Bridge [With] Admonitions [For The] End, [and] enable [their] families’ sons, daughters [and other] family members, [to] all rely [on the] instructions of support-chanting people, so that [they do] not go so far [to], because [of their] ‘filial’ minds, then cause relatives [to] instead receive [the] suffering of falling.

除助念外,均非所宜。

Except support-chanting, all [other practices are] not those suitable.
