[502] Why Say Those Children And Grandchildren Who Do Not Know The Buddha’s Dharma, And Destroy The Right Mindfulness Of Persons Approaching Life’s End Are For Those Fallen Into A Well Dropping Rocks? 为什么说不知佛法之子孙,破坏念佛人临终正念是落井下石?

往生西方,注重信愿。仗佛力故,虽素不信佛者直至临终,一经善知识启迪,果能生信发愿,称名求生,悉得往生彼国。以此心乃末后之心,最为有力。

Rebirth [in the] West[ern Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss (极乐世界)] emphasises [on] Faith [and] Aspiration. Relying [on the] Buddha’s power thus, although [there are] those [who] normally [do] not believe [in the] Buddha, directly until approaching [life’s] end, once going through [a] good-knowing friend’s inspiration, if able [to] give rise [to] Faith [and] Aspiration, [to] recite [Āmítuó]fó[’s (阿弥陀佛) name to] seek birth [in his Pure Land], all [will] attain rebirth [in] that land. With this mind thus ending [the] mind [of] after-[thoughts, it] is most powerful.

又既有善知识开导,启其正信,又有助念,俾心得清净,专致于佛号,了无异念夹杂,故能得其实益也。

Again, both having [a] good-knowing friend’s inspiring guidance, starting that right Faith, and having support-chanting, so that [the] mind attains purification, [with] focused devotion [to Āmítuó]fó[’s name], completely without different thoughts mixed [between], thus able [to] attain these benefits.

世有毕生念佛,临终被不知佛法之子孙破坏其正念,以致不得往生者何限?

[The] world has [those for] all their lives mindful [of Āmítuó]fó’[s name. When] approaching [life’s] end, [of those] by [their] children [and] grandchildren [who do] not know [the] Buddha’s Dharma, destroying their Right Mindfulness, so that [they do] not attain rebirth [in Pure Land, this has] what limit?

王母之往生,由其子湛然、卓然识大体,知佛法,故能成就其正念耳。

[On the] rebirth of Wáng [Family’s] Mother, due [to] her son Zhànrán’s outstanding recognition [of the] big picture, [and] knowledge [of the] Buddha’s Dharma, thus [was she] able [to] accomplish her Right Mindfulness.

若其子不知大体,与临终助念之义,则未死而澡浴换衣,悲恋哭泣,勿道王母之功行浅近者不得往生,即功行深远者亦不得往生。

If her son [did] not know [the] big picture, with [the] meaning of support-chanting [when] approaching [life’s] end, then yet [to] die, then washing [and] changing clothes, [with] sorrowful attachment crying, not speaking [about those with] shallow [and] superficial skills [and] practice of Wáng [Family’s] Mother not attaining rebirth, even those [with] profound [and] far-reaching skills [and] practice also [will] not attain rebirth [in Pure Land].

唯证忍之人可不受其破坏,其余则无不为此种落井下石之孝所误者。

Only those persons [who have] realised forbearance can not receive this destruction, [with] those others, then without [those] not by this kind of ‘filiality’, [that for those] fallen [in a] well dropping rocks harmed.

余幸王母之得助念而往生,悲被破坏者羁留此界仍旧轮回。

I rejoice [for] Wáng [Family’s] Mother’s attaining of support-chanting [to] then [be] reborn, [and feel] sorrow [for] those by destroyers detained [in] this realm, [to] still [be] reborn.

故特明示损益,以祈世之为人子者,及一切人每见有临终者,皆如此助念,俾彼亡者同得往生,则幸甚幸甚!愿见闻者,悉皆注意。

Thus specially [and] clearly teaching [the] losses [and] gains, with [this] requesting those as children [in this] world, and all [other] people, every time seeing [there] having those approaching [life’s] end, all like this [practise] support-chanting, so that those deceased, [can] together attain rebirth [in Pure Land]. Then [will this be] extremely fortunate, extremely fortunate! May those [who] see [and] hear [this], all [pay] attention.
