[372] Reciting Āmítuófó’s Name And Reading Books Have What Differences? 念佛与看书有什么不同?

一心念佛,又不可专事阅览。念佛是正行,行路等何必看书,只好念佛。

[For] wholehearted mindfulness [of] Buddha, [there] also must not [be] focus [on the] practice [of] reading. [As] reciting [Āmítuó]fó[’s name (阿弥陀佛)] is [the] Main Practice, [when] travelling [and] others, why must [there be] reading? [They are] only good [for] reciting [Āmítuó]fó[’s name].

看书与念佛两不相同。念佛行住坐卧都好念,看书,非凝神静虑,不得其义意。

Reading books and reciting [Āmítuó]fó[’s name are] both not [the] same [as] each other. [On] reciting [Āmítuó]fó[’s name, when] walking, standing, sitting [and] lying down, all are] good [for] mindfulness. [On] reading books, [if] not [with] concentrated attention [for] quiet contemplation, not attaining their meanings.

念佛之要,在「都摄六根,净念相继」。欲都摄六根,只长听自念之佛声,则得之矣。

[The] essential of reciting [Āmítuó]fó[’s name, is] in ‘gathering all six roots, [with] pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession’. [If] desiring [to] gather all six roots, only [with] long listening [to] one’s own reciting of [the] Buddha’s [name’s] sound, then attaining [it].
