[12] Being Noble Ones And Being Buddhas’ Instructions

I once said [that with] Kǒngzǐ [i.e. Confucius] therefore being [a] sagacious person, [this is] certainly not [due to] one aspect. However, its essential [is] in [his teaching that, ‘When] three persons [are] walking [together, they] must have my teachers.’

[Note: From the better one, oneself as the third party can learn to be more good. From the worse one, oneself as the third party can learn to not be more evil.]

[With] those evil also as teachers, who [are] suited then, [to] not [be] teachers? [With] knowledge thus, how can [he] not be [a] sagacious person?

Again, [I] once said [that with] Śākya[muni] Buddha therefore as [a] Buddha, [this is] certainly not [due to] one aspect. However, its essential [is] in when [he was] within [the] mountains cultivating practices, [with the] King out hunting, [who] asked where [a] beast was.

If truthfully telling him, then harming [the] beast, not truthful telling him, then [with] false speech.

Deeply pondering [and] yet [to] reply, [the] King angrily cut off one arm.

Again asking, likewise deeply pondering [and] yet [to] reply, [he] again cut off [the other] one arm.

Thus giving rise [to the] vow, saying, ‘When I become [a] Buddha, [I will] first deliver this person, [to] not cause people below [the] heavens [to] emulate him [to] do evil.’

Retaining [this] mind thus, how can [he] not become [a] Buddha?

Later transcending [the] world [to] accomplish Buddhahood, that first delivered Kauṇḍinya, [was] thus [the] King at that time.

[If] able [to] thus [be] with cultivation [of the] Pure Land [path, then] standing together with all Great Bodhisattvas equally.

[Original headnotes: (As the) Buddha (had) departed (from) all forms, thus (did he) not give rise (to) anger. (As the) Buddha (is with) with loving-kindness (and) compassion as roots, (and with) enemies (and) relatives (being) equal, (he) thus desired (to) first deliver this person.]
