[00] Guidance To The Severely Sick

‘Dearest _____ [name of dying person], as your serious sickness might lead to sudden death, you should let go of all attachments now. It is time to sincerely Niànfó, by reciting Āmítuófó’s sacred name wholeheartedly. Once connecting to him, he will be able to compassionately guide you to his Pure Land, where there is no more suffering, only bliss. Once with sincere Niànfó, you will have no more pain or fear.

With Āmítuófó’s blessings, if your lifespan is yet to end, you will be quickly healed. If it is ending, you will quickly reach his Pure Land, with instant, complete and lasting healing. To be sincere, do not seek healing in this world, only seeking birth in his Pure Land. Otherwise, if your lifespan is ending, you cannot heal or reach his Pure Land.

If you are able to, please Niànfó softly for yourself to hear. If not, hearing our Niànfó, do it in your mind too, without thinking of any other matter. Let us Niànfó sincerely now. Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó…’

[00] 重病者的开示

「亲爱的 _____ [临终者名]，因为您有重病，而可能突然死亡，必须现在放下一切执着。现在就是真诚一心念阿弥陀佛圣号的时候。一旦与佛感应，他就能慈悲引导您到他的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。一旦真诚念佛，您就不再有疼痛或恐惧。

有了阿弥陀佛的加持，如果您的寿命未尽，就会快速痊愈。如果将尽，就会快速生净土，即刻得到永久的痊愈。为了要真诚，请别求在世得痊愈，只求生净土。要不然，如果寿命将尽，即不得痊愈，又不得生净土。

如果您能，请小声念佛，让自己听得到。如果不能，请听着我们念佛时，在心里一起念，任何其他事都不想。让我们现在用最真诚的心念佛。阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

[01] Guidance To Dying Person

‘Dearest _____ [name of dying person], you have done much good already, having done _____ [list some outstanding good deeds] for your family, friends and society. And we will continue to do more good in your name to create merits for you. For this, you should rejoice and have peace of mind. As you are about to depart, it is time to stop thinking about [your attachments such as] family, wealth, status, [or your aversions such as] pain, regrets, grudges and fears, as these thoughts cannot help you now, and can only disturb you. The best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones is to Niànfó with us sincerely now, so that you can reach Āmítuófó’s Pure Land – where there is no more suffering, where there is only bliss. Do not worry that you are not pure enough, for Āmítuófó is compassionate and will receive you if you wish to be a better person from now on. Even those who had made great mistakes but repent can reach Pure Land by sincere Niànfó. Please follow our Niànfó and chant along softly, or in your mind. Focusing only on the name of Āmítuófó wholeheartedly, you will definitely see Āmítuófó come to guide you to his Pure Land. Please follow only Āmítuófó and no one else. Please do not worry about your loved ones, as they will be fine. They too will Niànfó to reach Pure Land when it is time to meet you there. Let us Niànfó sincerely now. Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó…’

[01] 临终者的开示

「亲爱的 _____ [临终者名]，您已经为了家人、朋友和社会，做了许多贡献，就好比 _____ [列出一些杰出的善行]。我们将继续以您的名义，为您行善造功德。所以，您应该随喜功德而安心。既然您将要离开，现在就要放下【您的执着，如】家庭、财富、地位，【或所厌恶的，如】疼痛、遗憾、怨恨、恐惧，因为这些妄想都帮不了您，也只会干扰您。现在最能利益自己和您所爱的人的，就是真诚地跟我们一起念佛。这样就可以往生到阿弥陀佛的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。别担心您不够清净。只要您现在诚心悔过，阿弥陀佛一定会慈悲接引您。即使是犯过大错的人，一旦忏悔，而真诚念佛，也可以往生净土。请随着我们的念佛，轻声跟着念，或在心中默念。只要全心全意念佛，您一定会看到阿弥陀佛来接引您到他的净土。请只跟着阿弥陀佛去，而别跟随其他人。请别担心您的家人，因为他们都会安好。将来他们也会念佛往生净土，与您见面。让我们现在用最真诚的心念佛。阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

[02] Guidance To Karmic Creditors

‘On the behalf of _____ [name of dying person], we sincerely apologise for all the mistakes he/she had done to cause you suffering. As the Buddha taught, the suffering from hatred cannot be ceased by more hatred. As such, may you forgive him/her. We will also do much good to share merits with you, to ease your suffering. After we chant the following “Verse For Repentance” on everyone’s behalf, may we Niànfó together sincerely, until you see Āmítuófó come to guide you to his Pure Land, where there is no more suffering, where there is only bliss. Please follow only Āmítuófó and no one else.

Verse For Repentance

Of all my past created evil karma, all by beginningless greed, anger and delusion, from my body, speech and mind as arisen, for all I now express repentance.

[Recite thrice, prostrating before Buddha image once after each time]

[02] 冤亲债主的开示

「我们代表 _____ [临终者名] 之前所做的一切错误，和他/她带给您的痛苦真心道歉。如佛陀说教，仇恨带来的痛苦不可能用更多仇恨熄灭。因此，希望您能原谅他/她。我们也将会多加行善，回向功德给您，为您减轻痛苦。在我们为大家念完以下的《忏悔文》后，让我们一起真诚念佛，直到您看到阿弥陀佛来接引您到他的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。请只跟着阿弥陀佛去，而别跟随其他人。

忏悔文

我昔所造诸恶业，
皆由无始贪瞋痴，
从身语意之所生，
一切我今皆忏悔。

(三称，每称礼佛一拜)

阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

Verse For Taking Refuge

I, disciple _____ [name of reciter], on the behalf of _____ [name of dying person], receive the Threefold Refuge.

I take refuge in the Buddhas,
I take refuge in the Dharma,
I take refuge in the Sangha.

I take refuge in the Buddhas, the honoured ones doubly and fully endowed with meritorious virtues and wisdom.
I take refuge in the Dharma, the honoured teachings for departure from craving.
I take refuge in the Sangha, the honoured ones among assemblies.

I take refuge in the Buddhas completely,
I take refuge in the Dharma completely,
I take refuge in the Sangha completely.

[Recite thrice, prostrating before Buddha image once each line]

皈依文

我，弟子 _____，代 _____ ，三皈依。

皈依佛，
皈依法，
皈依僧。

皈依佛，两足尊。
皈依法，离欲尊。
皈依僧，众中尊。

皈依佛竟，
皈依法竟，
皈依僧竟。

（三称，每句礼佛一拜）

[03] Agreement Before Entry

‘Now that _____ [name of dying person] is dying, we must do our best to guide him/her towards the best rebirth possible – in Āmítuófó’s Pure Land, where there is no more suffering, where there is only bliss.

The way to do this is by taking hourly shifts to Niànfó sincerely without interruption in his/her presence, to encourage him/her to do the same.

We must not disturb him/her by speaking, crying, holding the hand or even touching as these can cause great pain and distress. If you must cry, please do it where it cannot be heard or seen. Let us Niànfó sincerely now. Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó…’

[03] 入门前的协议

「现在，_____ [临终者名] 即将往生。我们必须尽力引导他/她得到最好的往生—到阿弥陀佛的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。

达到这个目的方法，就是每一个小时轮班，不间断在他/她身旁真诚念佛，鼓励他/她一起念。

我们绝对不能干扰他/她，和他/她说话、握手、抚摸、甚至哭泣，因为这都会造成巨大的痛苦和困扰。如果忍不住要哭，请到他/她听不到，也看不到的地方哭。让我们现在用最真诚的心念佛。阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

[04] Guidance To The Deceased

‘Dearest _____ [name of deceased], as you are now deceased, it is time to Niànfó with us sincerely now, so that you can reach Āmítuófó’s Pure Land – where there is no more suffering, where there is only bliss.

Please do not be attached to your wealth and family, as you have to leave them behind. We assure you that all will be well. They too will Niànfó to reach Pure Land when it is time to meet you there. Please Niànfó with us as sincerely as you can because this is the only way to have the best rebirth before it is too late. This is the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones.

_____ [number of] days later, your body will be cremated/buried. Please do not be attached to it. Please continue to Niànfó sincerely all the way, until you see Āmítuófó come to guide you to his Pure Land. Please follow only Āmítuófó and no one else. Let us Niànfó sincerely now. Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó…’

[04] 往生者的开示

「亲爱的_____ [往生者名]，因为您已经过世了，这时应该真诚地跟我们一起念佛。这样就可以往生到阿弥陀佛的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。

请别执着您的财富和家人，因为这些都必须放下。我们向您保证，一切都会安好。时间到时，大家也会念佛往生到净土，与您见面。以免时间不够，为了得到最好的往生，请您以最真诚的心，跟我们一起念佛。这是您能为自己和大家做的最好一件事。

_____ [数] 天后，您的遗体将会被火化／埋葬。请别执着它。请继续真诚地念佛，直到您看见阿弥陀佛来接引您到他的净土。请只跟着阿弥陀佛去，而别跟随其他人。让我们现在用最真诚的心念佛。阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

[05] Verse For Sharing Of Merits

May these meritorious virtues, adorn the Buddha’s Pure Land [so as to be born there], repay the four weighty sources of kindness [which are our parents, the Triple Gem (Buddhas, Dharma, Saṅgha), society (country) and all sentient beings] above, and relieve suffering of the three paths [of hell-beings, hungry ghosts and animals] below. If there are those who see or hear this, may all give rise to the Bodhi Mind [(Bodhicitta) which is the aspiration to attain Buddhahood while guiding all sentient beings to the same goal], and at the end of this one retribution body [that is karmically subject to suffering], be born in the Land Of Ultimate Bliss [which is Āmítuófó’s Pure Land] together.

After reciting the above for all beings, the following can be added.

‘May _____ [name of dying/deceased], along with his/her karmic creditors be reborn in Āmítuófó’s Pure Land too.’

[05] 回向文

愿以此功德，庄严佛净土，
上报四重恩，下济三途苦。
若有见闻者，悉发菩提心，
尽此一报身，同生极乐国。

为一切众生念完以上后，可以附加以下。

「愿_____ [临终者/往生者名]，连同他／她的冤亲债主，一起往生到阿弥陀佛的净土。」

（注：四重恩是父母、佛法僧三宝、国土与一切众生。三途是地狱、饿鬼与畜生道。菩提心是上求佛道，下化众生的大愿。一报身是这一个受恶业报应的身。）

[06] Guidance Before Cleaning And Dressing

‘Dearest _____ [name of deceased], as we now have to undress, clean and re-dress your expired body, please do not be attached to it. Please continue to only Niànfó with us sincerely, so that you can reach Āmítuófó’s Pure Land – where there is no more suffering, where there is only bliss, to have the best rebirth before it is too late. This is the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones. _____ [number of] days later, your body will be cremated/buried. Please do not be attached to it. Please continue to Niànfó sincerely all the way, until you see Āmítuófó come to guide you to his Pure Land. Please follow only Āmítuófó and no one else. Let us Niànfó sincerely now. Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó…’

[06] 净身换衣前的开示

「亲爱的_____ [往生者名]，因为我们现在须要为您的遗体换衣净身，请别执着它。请真诚地跟我们一起念佛。这样就可以往生到阿弥陀佛的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。以免时间不够，为了得到最好的往生，请您以最真诚的心，跟我们一起念佛。这是您能为自己和大家做的最好一件事。_____ [数] 天后，您的遗体将会被火化／埋葬。请别执着它。请继续真诚地念佛，直到您看见阿弥陀佛来接引您到他的净土。请只跟着阿弥陀佛去，而别跟随其他人。让我们现在用最真诚的心念佛。阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

[07] Guidance Before Encoffining

‘Dearest _____ [name of deceased], as we now have to encoffin your expired body, please do not be attached to it. Please continue to only Niànfó with us sincerely, so that you can reach Āmítuófó’s Pure Land – where there is no more suffering, where there is only bliss, to have the best rebirth before it is too late. This is the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones. _____ [number of] days later, your body will be cremated/buried. Please do not be attached to it. Please continue to Niànfó sincerely all the way, until you see Āmítuófó come to guide you to his Pure Land. Please follow only Āmítuófó and no one else. Let us Niànfó sincerely now. [07] 入殓前的开示

「亲爱的_____ [往生者名]，因为我们现在须要将您的遗体入殓，请别执着它。请真诚地跟我们一起念佛。这样就可以往生到阿弥陀佛的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。以免时间不够，为了得到最好的往生，请您以最真诚的心，跟我们一起念佛。这是您能为自己和大家做的最好一件事。_____ [数] 天后，您的遗体将会被火化／埋葬。请别执着它。请继续真诚地念佛，直到您看见阿弥陀佛来接引您到他的净土。请只跟着阿弥陀佛去，而别跟随其他人。让我们现在用最真诚的心念佛。阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

[08] Guidance Before Funeral Procession

‘Dearest _____ [name of deceased], as we now have to carry your casket for cremation/burial, please do not be attached to it. Please continue to only Niànfó with us sincerely, so that you can reach Āmítuófó’s Pure Land – where there is no more suffering, where there is only bliss, to have the best rebirth before it is too late. This is the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones. Please do not be attached to it. Please continue to Niànfó sincerely all the way, until you see Āmítuófó come to guide you to his Pure Land. Please follow only Āmítuófó and no one else. Let us Niànfó sincerely now. Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó…’

[08] 出殡前的开示

「亲爱的_____ [往生者名]，因为我们现在须要将您的棺木抬起，前往火化／埋葬，请别执着它。请真诚地跟我们一起念佛。这样就可以往生到阿弥陀佛的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。以免时间不够，为了得到最好的往生，请您以最真诚的心，跟我们一起念佛。这是您能为自己和大家做的最好一件事。请继续真诚地念佛，直到您看见阿弥陀佛来接引您到他的净土。请只跟着阿弥陀佛去，而别跟随其他人。让我们现在用最真诚的心念佛。阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

[09] Guidance Before Cremation

[10] Guidance Before Urn Storage

‘Dearest _____ [name of deceased], as we now have to store your ashes in an urn, please do not be attached to them. Please continue to only Niànfó with us sincerely, so that you can reach Āmítuófó’s Pure Land – where there is no more suffering, where there is only bliss, to have the best rebirth before it is too late. This is the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones. Please continue to Niànfó sincerely all the way, until you see Āmítuófó come to guide you to his Pure Land. Please follow only Āmítuófó and no one else. Let us Niànfó sincerely now. Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó…’

[10] 安放骨灰瓮前的开示

「亲爱的_____ [往生者名]，因为我们现在须要将您的骨灰放入瓮内，请别执着它。请真诚地跟我们一起念佛。这样就可以往生到阿弥陀佛的净土。那里没有痛苦，只有安乐。以免时间不够，为了得到最好的往生，请您以最真诚的心，跟我们一起念佛。这是您能为自己和大家做的最好一件事。请继续真诚地念佛，直到您看见阿弥陀佛来接引您到他的净土。请只跟着阿弥陀佛去，而别跟随其他人。让我们现在用最真诚的心念佛。阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛、阿弥陀佛…」

This is the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones. Please continue to Niànfó sincerely all the way, until you see Āmítuófó come to guide you to his Pure Land. [14] Guidance For The Seven Seven-Days

Please do not be attached to your wealth and family, as you have to leave them behind. We assure you that all will be well. They too will Niànfó to reach Pure Land when it is time to meet you there. Please Niànfó with us as sincerely as you can because this is the only way to have the best rebirth before it is too late. This is the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones.
