[13] Arhats’ Instructions

[The] Buddha said, ‘Arhats, although able [to] receive heavenly beings’ offerings, yet [their] blessings compared with people [are] also inferior. If [there] is [a] person [for a] hundred years making offerings [to] Arhats [in the] four continents, [this is] not as good as giving rise [to the] Bodhisattva Mind, [on] one day making offerings [to a] Buddha.’

盖佛自无量劫来救度众生,无非得福,而福利人也胜;

Because Buddhas, from immeasurable kalpas [since], save [and] deliver sentient beings, [they are] without [that] not attaining blessings, then [with their] blessings benefitting people also [being] supreme.

Arhats liberated [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, thereupon enter [Pari]nirvāṇa, alone [with] good [for] themselves. Thus [are their] blessings compared with [these] people inferior.

[Original headnotes: Great Arhats (are) not here (like) this example. Like Śāriputra (who) said, ‘(I will) return (to) enable all sentient beings, (to be) like me, one without two.’ How (can) this (be) alone (with) good (for) oneself?]

[The] Buddha also said, ‘If people have blessings, [they have] formerly made offerings [to] Buddhas.’

Likewise, [do] not say [that] making offerings [is] thus after death’s practice. [In] recent years, Xiùzhōu [had] a monastic [with] focused recitation [of] Āmítuófó [i.e. Amitā(bha) Buddha], for people praying [for their] sicknesses, [who] immediately attained complete recovery. How can it be said [that the] Buddha [does] not [have] benefits for [us] while living?

Since [there] can [be] praying [for] sicknesses, then likewise can [there be] praying [for] blessings, only fearing [that the] faithful mind [is] not reached only.

If cultivating [the] Pure Land [path], those hoping to return, [to] come [and] transform [others], especially cannot [be] without blessings, thus [with] this [that] cannot [be] not known.
