[Twenty-First (Light) Precept (Against With) Anger Beating (And) Getting Revenge]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, [they] must not, with anger get revenge [for others’] anger, with beating get revenge [for others’] beating. If [those] killed [are their] fathers, mothers, brothers, [sisters and] six close [relatives, they] must not inflict revenge. If their country’s lord [is] by other persons killed, [they] also must not inflict revenge. Killing lives [to] avenge lives, [does] not accord [with the] filial path. [They] also [should] not keep slave servants, beat, scold [or] humiliate [them, to] every day [give] rise [to the] three karmas, [with] verbal transgressions immeasurable, moreover, [to] intentionally create transgressions of [the] Seven [Heinous] Transgressions. And [if] those Bodhisattvas [who have] left [the] household life, without loving-kindness get revenge, and even [for those] within [the] six close [relatives] intentionally [get] revenge, [they] commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [147] Never Retaliate For Revenge: There must not be retaliating of anger with anger, violence with violence, not even when relatives and Kings are killed, as even those angry and violent were our many past lives’ parents.
Note [148] Never Keep, Beat And Scold Slaves: There must not be keeping, beating and scolding of slaves.
Note [149] Never Create The Seven Heinous Transgressions: There must not be creating of the Seven Heinous Transgressions.
Practice Summary:
(113) Do not with anger retaliate violently.
(114) Do not seek revenge for relatives or Kings.
(115) Do not keep servant slaves, beat, scold or humiliate them.
(116) Do not create the Seven Heinous Transgressions.

[Twenty-Second (Light) Precept (Against With) Arrogance Not Requesting (For The) Dharma]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, [those who have] first began [to] depart [from the] household [life], yet [to] have that understood, then personally relying [on] intelligence [and] existing knowledge, or relying [on being] noble [with] years old, or relying [on] great family names’ high households, “great” understanding [and] great blessings, great wealth abundant [with] money [and] seven treasures, with these arrogant, then not consulting [and] receiving first learning Dharma Teachers [on the] Sūtras [and] Discipline, [with] these Dharma Teachers, perhaps [from] small family names, [with] years young, [from] lowly households, poor, [and with] many roots not complete, yet truly having virtue, [with] all Sūtras [and] Discipline completely understood, yet those new learning Bodhisattvas, [who] must not look [at] Dharma Teachers’ lineages, then [do] not come [to] consult [and] receive [these] Dharma Teachers [on the] Supreme Truth, [they] commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [150] Learn From The More Learned: Beginner monastics who are not learned should not rely on being ‘intelligent’, ‘knowledgeable’, ‘noble’, ‘blessed’, old, and/or being from great or wealthy clans, to arrogantly not learn and enquire from experienced and virtuous teachers with understanding of the supreme teachings and these Precepts, even if the latter lack the attributes above, or are even disabled.
Practice Summary:
(117) Do not, without that understood, be arrogant due to intelligence, knowledge, nobility, years senior, great family name, high clan, great ‘understanding’, blessings and wealth, not consult and learn from virtuous Dharma Teachers, perhaps of humble family names, young, lowly clans, poor and incomplete roots, who have first learnt the Sūtras and Discipline completely, including the Supreme Truth.
[Twenty-Third (Light) Precept (Against With) Arrogance Unorthodoxly Speaking]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, after [the] Buddha’s Parinirvāṇa, when desiring with good minds [to] receive [these] Bodhisattva Precepts, at before [a] Buddha [or] Bodhisattva image, personally vowing [to] receive [these] Precepts, should with seven days before [the] Buddha repent, [with] attaining sight [of] good forms, then attaining [these] Precepts. If not attaining good forms, [there] should [be continual practice, for] two sevens [and] three sevens, and even [for] one year, [there] must [be] attaining [of] good forms. [Having] attained good forms already, then attaining before [the] Buddha [or] Bodhisattva image, receiving [of these] Precepts. If not attaining good forms, although before [a] Buddha image receiving [these] Precepts, [this is] not named [as] attaining [these] Precepts. If when first receiving [these] Bodhisattva Precepts, before Dharma Teachers receiving [these] Precepts, [they do] not need [to] see good forms. Why thus? These Dharma Teachers, [are with] teachers [to] teachers conferring [them to] one another, thus not needing good forms. When with these Dharma Teachers, before [them] receiving [these] Precepts, immediately attaining [these] Precepts. With giving rise [of the] utmost sincere mind thus, then attaining [these] Precepts. If within [a] thousand lǐs, not able [to have a] Precepts-Conferring Teacher, [there] must [be], before [a] Buddha [or] Bodhisattva image, personally vowing [to] receive [these] Precepts, and [there] must [be] sight [of] good forms. If Dharma Teachers, personally relying [on] understanding [of the] Sūtras [and] Discipline, [in the] Great Vehicle learning [these] Precepts, with countries’ Kings, Crown Princes [and a] hundred officials, with [them] as good friends, yet [when] new learning Bodhisattvas come [to] ask [about] these Sūtras’ meanings [and the] Discipline’s meanings, those [with the] slighting mind, evil mind [and] arrogant mind, not one [by] one well answering [that] asked, commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [151] Repent For Good Forms To Receive These Precepts: Those without access to Precept Teachers (戒师) after the Buddha’s time, if aspiring to receive these Precepts, should first have seven days of utmost sincere repentance practice before a Buddhist shrine till good forms are attained, without which, there should be continual practice for more weeks.
Note [152] Never Ignore Dharma Enquiries: Precept Teachers must not favour associating with government officials, while hatefully and arrogantly slighting, and not answering beginner Bodhisattvas who have come to enquire on the teachings and these Precepts.
Practice Summary:
(118) When vowing to receive these Precepts before a Buddha or Bodhisattva image, there must be seven days’ practice of repentance, till good signs are seen. If not, there should be continual practice week after week, and even for one year.
(119) If there are no Precept Teachers within a thousand lǐs to confer these precepts, there can be vowing to receive them before a Buddha or Bodhisattva image. (See above too.)
(120) When beginner Bodhisattvas ask on the meanings of Sūtras and the Discipline, do not be with slighting, hatred and arrogance, to not answer them one by one.

[Twenty-Fourth (Light) Precept (Against) Not Cultivating (And) Learning (For) Buddhahood]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, [those who] have [the] Buddha’s Sūtras [and] Discipline [of the] Great Vehicle, Right Views, Right Nature [and] Right Dharma’s Body, yet not able [to] diligently learn [and] practise [them, are] then [like those] relinquishing [the] seven treasures, [to] instead learn [from] evil views, [the] Two Vehicles, external paths, secular classics, Abhidharma, mixed treatises [and] all book records. This severs [from] Buddha-nature, [and] obstructs [the] path’s causes [and] conditions, [and is] not practice [of the] Bodhisattva path. If [there are] those intentionally doing [this, they] commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [153] Learn And Practise The Great Vehicle Diligently: There should be diligent learning and practising of the Sūtras and Discipline for Buddhahood. Conversely, there should not be learning from evil views, the Small Vehicle, external paths and secular texts.
(Those of the Small Vehicle are considered as provisional teachings, for self-liberation only, thus not totally aligned to those of the Great Vehicle, which are ultimate teachings, for the complete liberation of one and all.)
Practice Summary:
(121) Diligently study and practise the Great Vehicle’s Right Dharma in the Sūtras and Discipline.
(122) Do not learn from evil views, the Small Vehicle, external paths and secular texts, which are not of the Bodhisattva path.
[Twenty-Fifth (Light) Precept (Against) Not Well Knowing (The) Assembly]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, after [the] Buddha’s Parinirvāṇa, as persons speaking [the] Dharma, as those practising [the] Dharma, as hosts [of] monastic quarters, hosts teaching [and] transforming, hosts [of] seated meditation, [and] hosts [of those] travelling [and] coming, [they] should give rise [to the] compassionate mind, [to be] good [at] harmonising disputes, [and] good [at] guarding [the] Triple Gem’s objects, [to] not [be] without limit used, like [those for] themselves existing. Yet, those [who] instead disturb [the] assembly [with] fights, [or with] indulgent minds use [the] Triple Gem’s objects, commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [154] Harmonise Disputes And Guard The Triple Gem’s Objects: Those teaching and practising the Dharma, and those who host monastic quarters for meditators and travellers, should compassionately harmonise disputes and guard the Triple Gem’s objects well. Conversely, there must not be disturbing of the assembly with fights and indulgent abuse of these objects.
Practice Summary:
(123) Compassionately and skilfully harmonise quarrels over Dharma and monastic matters.
(124) Do guard the Triple Gem’s objects well, and not use them excessively for indulgence.
(125) Do not disturb assemblies with fights.
[Twenty-Sixth (Light) Precept (Against) Alone Receiving Gains]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, first within monastic quarters dwelling, later seeing guest Bodhisattva Bhikṣus, coming [to] enter monastic quarters, residences [and] cities. If within countries’ Kings’ residences, and even summer retreats’ peaceful abodes’ places, and great assemblies within, first-dwelling monastics should welcome [them] coming [and] send [them] off, [with] drinks [and] food making offerings, vihāras, bedding, rope beds [and] wooden beds, [with] everything given. If without [these] objects, [they] should sell [their] own bodies, and with male [and] female bodies, cut [their] own bodies’ flesh [to] sell, [to] provide that needed, with all giving them. If having alms givers coming [to] invite all monastics, [as] guest monastics have [their] gains’ parts, hosts [of] monastic quarters should sequentially send guest monastics [to] receive invitations. Yet, [if] those first dwelling monastics alone receive invitations, and not sending guest monastics, hosts [of] monastic quarters [will] attain immeasurable transgressions. [With] animals without difference, not [being] Śramaṇas, [and] not [being of the] Śākya lineage, [they] commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [155] Welcome Guest Monastics With Offerings: First dwelling monastics should welcome and send off guest monastics with food and lodging. If without these objects, there should be personal sacrifices made to provide them. If there are alms givers’ invitations, first dwelling monastics must sequentially send guest monastics to receive them for their parts of offerings too. (A vihāra is a temple dormitory.)
Practice Summary:
(126) If seeing guest monastics coming to monastic quarters, they should be welcomed and sent off, offered with drinks and food, temple dormitories, bedding and all other necessities.
(127) If without objects of offering, there should be selling of (services and) even one’s flesh to get and give that needed.
(128) If alms givers make offerings to the monastic community, guest monastics should receive them in part.
[Twenty-Seventh (Light) Precept (Against) Receiving Others’ (Personal) Invitations]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, all must not receive others’ invitations [for] gains [to be] attained [for] themselves, yet [when] these gains belong [to the] ten directions’ monastics. Yet [from] others receiving invitations, then obtaining [the] ten directions’ monastics’ objects [to be] attained [for] themselves. And within [the] Eight Blessings’ Fields, [with] all Buddhas [and] noble persons’, each [and every] one, monastic teachers, fathers, mothers [and] sick persons’ objects, personally using [them] thus, [they] commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [156] Never Take That Meant For Others For Oneself: There must not be receiving of invitations from others meant for many for personal gains only, (thus in effect ‘stealing’ from others).
Practice Summary:
(129) Do not receive others’ personal invitations to get the monastic community’s offerings for personal use.
(130) Do not take the Eight Blessings’ Fields’ (八福田) objects (meant to be shared) for personal use.
[Twenty-Eighth (Light) Precept (Against) Other Invitations (Of) Monastics]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, [there] are Bodhisattvas [who have] left [the] household [life], Bodhisattvas [who are] in [the] household [life], and all alms givers, when inviting monastic blessings’ field [with] requests [and] aspirations, [they] should enter monastic quarters [to] ask [the] person understanding [these] matters. Now desiring [to] invite monastics [for] requests [and] aspirations, [the person] understanding [these] matters [should] reply, saying, ‘Those sequentially inviting, then attain [inviting of the] ten directions’ virtuous [and] noble monastics.’ Yet [the] world’s people, [with] other invitations [of] five hundred Arhat [and] Bodhisattva monastics, [are] not as good [as those with] monastics sequentially, [with] one ordinary monastic. If [there are] those [with] other invitations [of] monastics, [these] are external paths’ methods. [The] Seven Buddhas [are] without other invitation methods, [which do] not follow [the] filial path. If [there are] those intentionally [with] other invitations [of] monastics, [they] commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [157] Invite Monastics Sequentially: When inviting monastics for requests and aspirations, there should be asking and facilitating for sequential invitation, thus filially inviting all noble monastics in effect, even if it seems that only one ordinary monastic was invited.
Note [158] Seven Buddhas (七佛): Latest Seven Buddhas in this Sahā World (娑婆世界):
(i) Śākyamuni Buddha (释迦牟尼佛)
(ii) Kāśyapa Buddha (迦叶佛)
(iii) Kanakamuni Buddha (拘那含牟尼佛)
(iv) Krakucchanda Buddha (拘留孙佛)
(v) Viśvabhu Buddha (毗舍浮佛)
(vi) Śikhin Buddha (尸弃佛)
(vii) Vipaśyin Buddha (毗婆尸佛)
(i) to (iv) arose in the present Auspicious Kalpa (贤劫).
(v) to (vii) arose in the previous Majestic Kalpa (庄严劫).
Practice Summary:
(131) When inviting monastic(s) for requests, the monastic Director Of Affairs should be informed, for sequential invitation, (as to have other personal invitations does not follow the filial path).
[Twenty-Ninth (Light) Precept (Against Having) Evil Livelihoods (For) Personal Survival]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, with evil minds thus, for gains, selling male [and] female sex, personally [with] hands making food, personally grinding [and] personally pounding, divining appearances [of] men [and] women, explaining dreams [to be] auspicious [or] inauspicious, [the unborn to] be male [or to] be female, [with] cursing techniques, skilled work, eagle-taming methods, blending [a] hundred kinds [of] poisons, [a] thousand kinds [of] poisons, snake poisons, gold [and] silver production poisons [and] witchcraft poisons, all without [the] compassionate mind, without [the] mind [of] filial piety. If [there are] those intentionally doing [them, they] commit a light defiled transgression.
Note [159] No Unskilful Services: There must not be sex-selling, food-preparing (as monastics should seek alms food), divining, dream-interpreting, gender-predicting, cursing, (various worldly) skilled working, eagle-taming and poison-blending, which are without compassion and filial piety.
(Such eagles mentioned are usually caught from the wild, thus enslaved. They are usually trained to catch smaller animals, thus used for killing. As they are carnivorous too, to rear them is to harm other animals in/directly.)
Practice Summary:
(132) Do not, with hatred and for gains, sell male and female sex.
(133) Do not, as monastics, make and prepare food.
(134) Do not observe appearances for (compatibility of) men and women.
(135) Do not explain dreams for auspiciousness and inauspiciousness.
(136) Do not predict the unborn to be male or female.
(137) Do not with cursing techniques, and other worldly skilled work.
(138) Do not be with methods for taming eagles.
(139) Do not blend poisons, snake venoms, poisons for producing gold and silver, and witchcraft poisons.
[Thirtieth (Light) Precept (Against) Not Respecting Good Periods]
If [as] Buddhas’ [Bodhisattva] disciples, with evil minds thus, [with] themselves slandering [the] Triple Gem, pretending [to] appear [to be] close [to it, with their] mouths shrewdly speaking [of] emptiness, [but with] practices within existence, managing [the] white-robed, for [the] white-robed, connecting [and] causing males [and] females, [to] meet [and be] engrossed [in] sex, creating all [kinds of] binding attachment. On [the] Six Purification Days, [and in the] year’s three long Purification Months, those doing killing [of] lives, plundering [and] stealing, breaking purification [and] violating Precepts, commit [a] light defiled transgression.
Note [160] Never Slander The Triple Gem, Pretend To Be Close For Advantages, Emptily Speak Of Emptiness And Matchmake: There must not be slandering of the Triple Gem, pretending to be close to it for advantages, speaking of emptiness (as if it has been realised) while practising within forms. There must also not be matchmaking of laypersons, which causes attachment.
Note [161] Purification Days And Months: There must be observation of the Eight Precepts (八戒) on the Six Purification Days (六斋日) and in the Three Purification Months (三斋月). As taught in the Upāsaka Precepts《优婆塞戒》, ‘On the Six Purification Days, and in the Three Purification Months, receive the Eight Precepts to uphold purification. Bodhisattvas at home should practise these practices.’ The Purification Days at least should be observed fully, if the Purification Months are challenging due to worldly obligations. However, as many of the Eight Precepts as possible can still be observed in these durations.
Practice Summary:
(140) Do not slander the Triple Gem, by pretending to appear to closely adhere to it, with the mouth then speaking of emptiness, with conduct within forms.
(141) Do not manage laypersons, for connecting and leading men and women, to meet and be addicted to sex, creating fetters of attachment.
(142) Do not, on the Six Purification Days and in the Three Purification Months, break the (Eight) Purification Precepts.
Thus, [are the third] ten [Light] Precepts, [which] should [be] learnt, [with the] reverent mind upholding [them. The] Chapter [On] Regulating Precepts within [will] extensively explain.’
