Why Is The Pure Land Dharma Door Able To Be Practised By The ‘Foolish’ Yet Difficult To Be Known By The ‘Wise’? 为何净土法门愚者能修而智者难晓?


Question: [Of the] Dharma Door [Of] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha, [the] foolish [are] still able [to] cultivate [it. Yet those of the] Precepts [i.e.Vinaya], Scriptural [and] Chán traditions, [with their] wisdom, [are] also difficult [to] know [it]. Why [is it] said [that] this Dharma unifies all those Dharma [Doors].


Answer: [If] desiring [to] know this meaning, [there] must [be] profound understanding [of the] Buddha’s power, [that with] Self-power, [their] greatness [and] smallness, superiority [and] inferiority. Then [will] all doubts [and] confusions, disperse thus, [like] ice melting.


That [of] Buddha and sentient beings, [their] mind-natures although [are the] same, if discussing [about their] power [and] function, [they are like the] sky [and] ground, far apart.


Verily, due [to] sentient beings [being] complete [with] immeasurable afflictions [and] evil karma, [their] meritorious virtues [and] wisdom, [are] not able [to be] revealed [to] appear.


[The] Buddha [is] however complete [with] immeasurable meritorious virtues [and] wisdom, [with] afflictions [and] evil karma, completely gone without remainder.


[The] Buddha and sentient beings, [are with being] confused [and] awakened, not [the] same. [As a] result, [of] power [and] function, [their] superiority [and] inferiority [are] totally different.


[The] Precepts, Scriptural [and] Chán traditions, all rely [on] Self-power [for] liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death. Therefore, long passing long kalpas, [it is] still difficult [to] depart [from the cycle of birth and death].


[The] Dharma Door [Of] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha, completely relies [on the] Buddha’s power, [that is] also merged [with] Self-power, [for] liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death. Therefore, [at the] end [of] this one life, then ascending [to] non-retrogression [in Pure Land for Buddhahood].
