[With Illusions Cultivate With Regard To Illusions]

于是普贤菩萨，在大众中，即从座起，顶礼佛足，右绕三匝，长跪叉手，而白佛言：「大悲世尊！愿为此会诸菩萨众，及为末世一切众生修大乘者，闻此圆觉清净境界，云何修行？

Thereupon, Universal Virtue Bodhisattva, within [the] great assembly, immediately from [his] seat arose, prostrated [at the] Buddha’s feet, [to the] right circumambulated three rounds, long knelt [with] crossed hands [i.e. joined palms], and [to the] Buddha said, ‘Great Compassionate World-Honoured [One], may [you], for this assembly’s all Bodhisattva assemblies, and for [the Dharma]-Ending Age‘s all those sentient beings cultivating [the] Great Vehicle, hearing [about] this Perfect Awakening’s pure state, speak [on] how [to] cultivate practices.

世尊！若彼众生知如幻者，身心亦幻，云何以幻还修于幻？若诸幻性一切尽灭，则无有心，谁为修行？云何复说修行如幻？若诸众生本不修行，于生死中常居幻化，曾不了知如幻境界，令妄想心云何解脱？愿为末世一切众生，作何方便渐次修习，令诸众生永离诸幻？」

World-Honoured [One], if those sentient beings know that illusion-like, [is with their] bodies [and] minds also [as] illusions, how [do they], with illusions still cultivate with regard to illusions? If all [with] illusory nature [are] all completely eliminated, then not having minds, who is [able to] cultivate practices? How [can there] again [be] speaking [of] cultivating practices [with the] illusion-like? If all sentient beings [who] originally [do] not cultivate practices, within [the cycle of] birth [and] death, constantly dwell [in] illusory manifestations, [and] previously [did] not understand clearly [on] illusion-like states, how [can they be] enabled [to be] liberated [from] their false thoughts’ minds? May [you], for [the Dharma]-Ending Age’s all sentient beings, [speak on] creating [of] what skilful means, [to] then gradually practise, [to] enable all sentient beings [to] forever depart [from] all illusions.’

作是语已，五体投地，如是三请，终而复始。

[Having] made these statements already, [with] five [parts of his] body thrown [on the] ground, [he] thus thrice entreated, [after] ending [each time], then again beginning.

尔时，世尊告普贤菩萨言：「善哉，善哉！善男子！汝等乃能为诸菩萨及末世众生，修习菩萨如幻三昧，方便渐次，令诸众生得离诸幻。汝今谛听！当为汝说。」

At that time, [the] World-Honoured [One] told Universal Virtue Bodhisattva, saying, ‘Excellent, excellent! Good man, you all [are] thus able [to], for all Bodhisattvas and [the Dharma]-Ending Age’s sentient beings, practise Bodhisattvas’ Illusion-like Samādhi, [to] skilfully [and] gradually, enable all sentient beings [to] attain departure [from] all illusions. You [should] now attentively listen. [I] will for you speak.’

时普贤菩萨奉教欢喜，及诸大众默然而听。

Then, Universal Virtue Bodhisattva received [the] teaching joyfully, and all [in the] great assembly silently then listened.

「善男子！一切众生种种幻化，皆生如来圆觉妙心。犹如空华，从空而有。幻华虽灭，空性不坏。众生幻心，还依幻灭；诸幻尽灭，觉心不动。依幻说觉，亦名为幻；若说有觉，犹未离幻；说无觉者，亦复如是。是故幻灭，名为不动。

‘Good man, all sentient beings’ all kinds [of] illusory manifestations, all arise [from the] Thus Come [Ones’] Perfect Awakening’s Wonderful Mind. Similar to [the] sky’s flowers [i.e. eye floaters], from [the] sky then having [them. With] illusory flowers although eliminated, [the] sky’s nature [i.e. of emptiness] [remains] not destroyed. Sentient beings’ illusory minds, still [have to] rely on illusions [to be] eliminated. [With] all illusions completely eliminated, Awakening’s Mind [remains] unmoving. Relying on illusions speaking [of] Awakening, [is] also named as [an] illusion. If speaking [of] having awakening, [this is] still yet [to] depart [from] illusions. That speaking [of being] without awakening, [is] likewise thus. Therefore, [that with] illusions eliminated, [is] named as [the] unmoving.

善男子！一切菩萨及末世众生，应当远离一切幻化虚妄境界。由坚执持远离心故，心如幻者，亦复远离。远离为幻，亦复远离。离远离幻，亦复远离。得无所离，即除诸幻。

Good man, all Bodhisattvas and [the Dharma]-Ending Age’s sentient beings, should far depart [from] all illusory manifested false states. Due [to] resolute [and] firm upholding [of the] far-departing’s mind thus, that mind illusion-like, [is] likewise far departed [from. With] far-departing as [an] illusion, likewise far departed [from. With] departing far [and] departing [from] illusions, likewise far departed [from]. Attaining without that [to] depart [from], immediately eliminates all illusions.

譬如钻火，两木相因，火出木尽，灰飞烟灭。以幻修幻，亦复如是。诸幻虽尽，不入断灭。

For example, like drilling [for] fire, [with] two wood [pieces] relying on each other, [when] fire [has] left [and the] wood [is] exhausted, [the] ashes [are] scattered [and the] smoke [is] dispersed. With [the] illusions cultivating illusions, [is] likewise thus. [With] all illusions although ended, not entering severance [and] cessation [i.e. annihilation].

善男子！知幻即离，不作方便；离幻即觉，亦无渐次。一切菩萨及末世众生，依此修行，如是乃能永离诸幻。」

Good man, knowing illusions, immediately departing [from them, is] without creating [of] skilful means. Departing [from] illusions, immediately awakening, [is] also without [that] gradual. All Bodhisattvas and [the Dharma]-Ending Age’s sentient beings, relying on this [for] cultivating practices, [are] thus able [to] forever depart [from] all illusions.‘

尔时，世尊欲重宣此义，而说偈言：

At that time, [the] World-Honoured [One], desiring [to] re-proclaim these meanings, then spoke [in] verse, saying,

「普贤汝当知，一切诸众生，无始幻无明，皆从诸如来，
圆觉心建立。犹如虚空华，依空而有相。空华若复灭，
虚空本不动。幻从诸觉生，幻灭觉圆满，觉心不动故。
若彼诸菩萨，及末世众生，常应远离幻。诸幻悉皆离，
如木中生火，木尽火还灭。觉则无渐次，方便亦如是。」

‘Universal Virtue, you should know, [that] all sentient beings’ beginningless illusory ignorance, [is] all from all Thus Come [Ones’] Perfect Awakening’s Mind established. Similar to [the] empty sky’s flowers [i.e. eye floaters], relying on [the] sky then having forms. [With the] sky’s flowers, if returning [to be] eliminated, [the] empty sky [is] originally unmoving. [As] illusions from all [of] Awakening arise, [with] illusions eliminated, Awakening [is] perfect [and] complete, [with] Awakening’s Mind unmoving thus. If [as] those all Bodhisattvas, and [the Dharma]-Ending Age’s sentient beings, [they] constantly should far depart [from] illusions. [With] all illusions all departed [from, is] like wood within [that] gave rise [to] fire, [with the] wood exhausted, [and the] fire returned [to be] eliminated [i.e. extinguished]. Awakening [is] then without [that] gradual [and] skilful, also thus.’
