佛言：『何为二十四愿？』
[The] Buddha said, “What are [the] twenty-four vows?”
『第一愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，无有泥犁、禽兽、薜荔、蜎飞、蠕动之类。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[1] “[The] First Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause my land within, [to] not have nirāya-[beings], birds, beasts, pretas, kinds of larvae, flying [and] wriggling [beings]. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of liberation from evil paths upon reaching Pure Land]
第二愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，无有妇人。女人欲来生我国中者，即作男子。诸无央数天人民，蜎飞蠕动之类，来生我国者，皆于七宝水池莲华中化生。长大皆作菩萨、阿罗汉，都无央数。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[2] [The] Second Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause my land within, [to] not have women. Those women [who] desire [to] come [to be] born within my land, [will] immediately become men. All those inexhaustible numerous heavenly [and] human people, kinds of larvae, flying [and] wriggling [beings, who] come [to be] born [in] my land, [will] all in seven treasures’ water ponds’ lotus flowers within [have] transformed births. Growing [in] greatness, all [will] become Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats, [with] all inexhaustibly numerous. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of liberation from female body, with lotus flowers’ transformed births, to become Arhats and Bodhisattvas]
第三愿，使某作佛时，令我国土，自然七宝，广纵甚大旷荡，无极自软好。所居舍宅，被服饮食，都皆自然，皆如第六天王所居处。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[3] [The] Third Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause my land, [to] naturally [have] seven treasures, vast [and] extensive, extremely great, spacious [and] expansive, without limit, naturally soft [and] excellent. [With] dwelling places [and] residences, bedding [and] clothing, drinks [and] food, all naturally, all like [those in the] Sixth Heaven’s King’s dwelling place. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of unlimited excellent treasures, with residences, clothing and food surpassing those of the heavens]
第四愿，使某作佛时，令我名字，皆闻八方上下，无央数佛国。皆令诸佛，各于比丘僧大坐中，说我功德国土之善。诸天人民，蜎飞蠕动之类，闻我名字，莫不慈心欢喜踊跃者，皆令来生我国。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[4] [The] Fourth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause my name, [to be by] all heard [in the] eight directions, above [and] below, [in] inexhaustible numerous Buddha lands. Within all, causing all Buddhas, [to] each in [their] Bhikṣu Saṃgha, [on their] great seats, [to] speak [on the] goodness of my meritorious virtues’ land. [Of] all heavenly [and] human people, kinds of larvae, flying [and] wriggling [beings, who] hear my name, none [will] not [be] those [with the] compassionate mind [and] joyful enthusiasm, [with] all enabled [to] come [to be] born [in] my land. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of name being heard everywhere, with the Pure Land praised by all Buddhas, and all hearing name with compassion, and joyful enthusiasm to be born there]
第五愿，使某作佛时，令八方上下，诸无央数天人民，及蜎飞蠕动之类，若前世作恶，闻我名字，欲来生我国者，即便反政自悔过。为道作善，便持经戒，愿欲生我国，不断绝。寿终，皆令不复泥犁、禽兽、薜荔，即生我国，在心所愿。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[5] [The] Fifth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause [the] eight directions, above [and] below, all [their] inexhaustible numerous heavenly [and] human people, and kinds of larvae, flying [and] wriggling [beings], if [in] past lives [having] done evil, [with] those hearing my name, desiring [to] come [to be] born [in] my land, [they will] immediately return [to that] right [with] personal repentance. For [the] path doing good, then upholding [the] sūtras [and] precepts, aspiring [with the] desire [to be] born [in] my land uninterruptedly. [When their] lives end, all [will be] caused [to] not again [be] nirāya-[beings], birds, beasts [and] pretas, [and] immediately [be] born [in] my land, wholeheartedly [with] that aspired. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all who have done evil, hearing name, and desiring to reach the Pure Land, immediately repenting, doing good, upholding the sūtras and precepts, not born in evil path;, born in the Pure Land]
第六愿，使某作佛时，令八方上下，无央数佛国，诸天人民，若善男子、善女人，欲来生我国，用我故益作善，若分檀布施，绕塔烧香，散花然灯，悬杂缯彩，饭食沙门，起塔作寺，断爱欲，来生我国作菩萨。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[6] [The] Sixth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, if [the] eight directions, above [and] below, [in] inexhaustible numerous Buddha lands, all heavenly [and] human people, if [with] good men [and] good women, desiring [to] come [to be] born [in] my land, using personal past benefits [to] do good, if dividing [for] dāna giving, circumambulating stūpas [and] burning incenses, scattering flowers [and] lighting lamps, hanging varicoloured banners, [making] food [offerings to] Śramaṇas, building stūpas [and] creating monasteries, severing love [and] desires, [they will] come [to be] born [in] my land [to] become Bodhisattvas. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all desiring to reach the Pure Land, practising generosity, reverencing, making offerings, creating Buddhist places, and severing attachment becoming Bodhisattvas in the Pure Land]
第七愿，使某作佛时，令八方上下，无央数佛国，诸天人民，若善男子、善女人，有作菩萨道，奉行六波罗蜜经。若作沙门，不毁经戒，断爱欲，斋戒清净，一心念欲生我国，昼夜不断绝。若其人寿欲终时，我即与诸菩萨、阿罗汉，共飞行迎之，即来生我国。则作阿惟越致菩萨，智慧勇猛。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[7] [The] Seventh Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, if [the] eight directions, above [and] below, [in] inexhaustible numerous Buddha lands, all heavenly [and] human people, if [with] good men [and] good women, [who] have undertaking [of the] Bodhisattva path, practising [the] Six Pāramitas’ sutras. Or [those] becoming Śramaṇas, not destroying [the] sūtras [and] precepts, severing love [and] desires, [with] purification precepts pure, wholeheartedly mindful [with the] desire [to be] born [in] my land, [in] day [and] night uninterrupted. If, when these persons lives [are] about [to] end, I [will] immediately, with many Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats, together fly [and] travel [to] welcome them, [to] immediately come [to be] born [in] my land. Then becoming Avaivartika Bodhisattvas, [with] wisdom bold [and] powerful. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all practising the Bodhisattva path, and those severing attachment, with pure precepts, desiring to reach the Pure Land wholeheartedly, being received by the Buddha, Bodhisattvas and Arhats, becoming Avaivartika Bodhisattvas]
第八愿，使某作佛时，令我国中诸菩萨，欲到他方佛国生，皆令不更泥犁、禽兽、薜荔。皆令得佛道。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[8] [The] Eighth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas within my land, [who] desire [to] go [to] other directions’ Buddha lands, [to] all [be] caused [to] not again [be] nirāya-[beings], birds, beasts [and] pretas. All [will be] caused [to] attain [the] Buddha path. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas not again born in evil paths upon leaving the Pure Land, with all becoming Buddhas]
第九愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉，面目皆端正，净洁姝好，悉同一色，都一种类，皆如第六天人。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[9] [The] Ninth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats’ appearances within my land, [to] all [be] upright, pure [and] beautiful, all [with the] same one colour, all [of] one kind, all like [the] Sixth Heaven’s people. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats being upright, pure and beautiful with the same colour]
第十愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉，皆同一心，所念所欲，言者豫相知意。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[10] [The] Tenth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, [to] all [have the] same one mind, [with] those thoughts, those desires [and] those words, in advance knowing one another’s minds. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats having the same mind, knowing one another’s minds]
第十一愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉，皆无有淫泆之心，终无念妇女意，终无有嗔怒、愚痴者。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[11] [The] Eleventh Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, [to] all not have those [with the] mind of licentiousness, [to the] end without thoughts [of] women [in] mind, [and to the] end not having anger [and] ignorance. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats not having lust, anger and ignorance]
第十二愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉，皆令心相敬爱，终无相嫉憎者。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[12] [The] Twelfth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, [to] all [be] caused [to have the] mind [of] respect [and] love [for] one another, [to the] end without those jealous [and] hateful [of] one another. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats having respect and love for one another, without jealousy and hatred of one another]
第十三愿，使某作佛时，令我国中诸菩萨，欲共供养八方上下，无央数诸佛，皆令飞行，即到欲得自然万种之物，即皆在前。持用供养诸佛，悉皆遍已后，日未中时，即飞行还我国。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[13] [The] Thirteenth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas within my land, [who] desire [to] make offerings [to the] eight directions, above [and] below, [their] inexhaustible numerous all Buddhas, [to] all [be] caused [to] fly [and] travel, [to] immediately receive [that] desired, attaining naturally [the] ten thousand kinds of objects, immediately [with] all before [them]. Holding [and] using [them to] make offerings [to] all Buddhas, after [to] all everywhere [made] already, when [with the] day yet [to be] noon, immediately flying [and] travelling [to] return [to] my land. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas being able to swiftly fly to make all desired offerings to all Buddhas]
第十四愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉欲饭时，即皆自然七宝钵中。有自然百味，饭食在前，食已自然去。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[14] [The] Fourteenth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, when [they] desire food, [to] immediately all naturally [have it] within seven treasures’ bowls. Having [the] natural hundred flavours’ food before [them, when] eaten already, naturally leaving. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats immediately getting all desired food]
第十五愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨身，皆紫磨金色，三十二相，八十种好，皆令如佛。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[15] [The] Fifteenth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas’ bodies within my land, [to] all [be] purple polished gold [in] colour, [with the] thirty-two forms, [and] eighty kinds [of] excellences, [with] all caused [to be] like [the] Buddha. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas having purple polished gold colour, with thirty-two forms and eighty excellences]
第十六愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉，语者如三百钟声，说经行道，皆如佛。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[16] [The] Sixteenth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, those speaking, [to be] like three hundred bells sounding, [when] speaking [the] sūtras [and] practising [the] path, [with] all like [the] Buddha. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats’ loud and clear speaking of the sutras, and practice of the path like the Buddha]
第十七愿，使某作佛时，令我洞视彻听，飞行十倍，胜于诸佛。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[17] [The] Seventeenth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, I [will] cause clear sight, pervasive hearing, flight [and] travel [to be] ten times, superior to all Buddhas’. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of supreme pervasive sight, hearing and flight]
第十八愿，使某作佛时，令我智慧，说经行道，十倍于诸佛。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[18] [The] Eighteenth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause my wisdom, [when] speaking [the] sūtras [and] practising [the] path, [to be] ten times [superior] to all Buddhas’. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of supreme wise speaking of the sūtras and practice of the path]
第十九愿，使某作佛时，令八方上下，无央数佛国，诸天人民，蜎飞蠕动之类，皆令得人道，悉作辟支佛、阿罗汉。皆坐禅一心，共欲计数，知我年寿，几千亿万劫岁数，皆令无有能极知寿者。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[19] [The] Nineteenth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, if [the] eight directions, above [and] below, [in] inexhaustible numerous Buddha lands, [with] all heavenly [and] human people, kinds of larvae, flying [and] wriggling [beings], all caused [to] attain [the] human path, [with] all becoming Pratyekabuddhas [and] Arhats. [With] all sitting [in] meditation single-mindedly, together desiring [to] count [the] number, [to] know my lifespan, [to have] how many thousand koṭis [of] ten thousand kalpas [of] years, all [will be] caused [to] not have those able [to] utmost know [my] lifespan. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Pratyekabuddhas and Arhats being unable to know the Buddha’s immeasurable lifespan]
第二十愿者，使某作佛时，令八方上下，各千亿佛国中，诸天人民，蜎飞蠕动之类，皆令作辟支佛、阿罗汉，皆坐禅一心，共欲计数，我国中诸菩萨、阿罗汉，知有几千亿万人，皆令无有能知数者。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[20] [The] Twentieth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, if [the] eight directions, above [and] below, each within [has a] thousand koṭis [of] Buddha lands, [with] all heavenly [and] human people, kinds of larvae, flying [and] wriggling [beings], all caused [to] become Pratyekabuddhas [and] Arhats, all sitting [in] meditation single-mindedly, together desiring [to] count [the] numbers, [of] all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, [to] know [there] are how many thousand koṭis [of] ten thousand persons, all [will be] caused [to] not have those able [to] know [their] numbers. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Pratyekabuddhas and Arhats being unable to know the Bodhisattvas and Arhats’ numbers in the Pure Land]
第二十一愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉，寿命无央数劫。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[21] [The] Twenty-First Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, [to have] lifespans [of] inexhaustible numerous kalpas. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats having immeasurable life]
第二十二愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉，皆智慧勇猛。自知前世亿万劫时，宿命所作，善恶却知，无极皆洞视彻，知十方去来现在之事。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[22] [The] Twenty-Second Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, [to] all [have] wisdom bold [and] powerful. Personally knowing, when [in] past lives [of] koṭis [of] ten thousand kalpas, [in] past lives those done, [with] good [and] evil then known, without limit, [with] all clearly seen pervasively, knowing [the] ten directions’ matters of [the] past, future [and] present. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats having bold and powerful wisdom, clearly seeing innumerable past lives, and knowing past, present and future matters everywhere]
第二十三愿，使某作佛时，令我国中，诸菩萨、阿罗汉，皆智慧勇猛，顶中皆有光明。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。
[23] [The] Twenty-Third Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause all Bodhisattvas [and] Arhats within my land, [to] all [have] wisdom bold [and] powerful, [with their] crowns within all having bright light. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.
[Attainment of all Bodhisattvas and Arhats having crowns with bright light]
第二十四愿，使某作佛时，令我顶中，光明绝好，胜于日月之明，百千亿万倍，绝胜诸佛。光明焰照，诸无央数天下，幽冥之处，皆当大明。诸天人民，蜎飞蠕动之类，见我光明，莫不慈心作善者，皆令来生我国。得是愿，乃作佛；不得是愿，终不作佛。』
[24] [The] Twenty-Fourth Vow: If, when I become [a] Buddha, [I will] cause my crown within, [to have] bright light absolutely excellent, superior to brightness [of the] sun [and] moon, [by a] hundred thousand koṭis [of] ten thousand times, absolutely surpassing all Buddhas’. [With the] bright light flaming [and] illuminating, [in] all inexhaustible numerous heavens below, [in] places of dimness [and] darkness, all will [have] great brightness. All heavenly [and] human people, kinds of larvae, flying [and] wriggling [beings], seeing my bright light, [will have] none [of] those not [with the] compassionate mind doing good, [with] all caused [to] come [to be] born [in] my land. Attaining this vow, thus becoming [a] Buddha. [If] not attaining this vow, [to the] end not becoming [a] Buddha.”
