All Bodhisattvas’ Thirty-Eight Wonderful Practices’ Causes And Effects
【师子】王子合掌恭敬而白【释迦牟尼】佛言:「唯愿如来为我宣说诸菩萨行。」
Prince [Lion] with joined palms reverencing, then to [Śākyamuni] Buddha said, ‘I only wish the Thus Come One can for me instruct on all Bodhisattva practices.’
尔时王子即说颂言:
At that time, the Prince immediately spoke this verse,
「云何得 【1】端正?【2】莲花中化生?
云何【3】知宿命?愿佛为宣说。」
‘How to attain [1] uprightness?
How to, [2] from a lotus flower within manifest birth?
How to [3] know past lives?
I wish the Buddha will for these instruct.’
尔时如来了达诸行究竟彼岸,随问而答即说颂曰:
At that time, the Thus Come One, having completely attained all practices and thoroughly understanding the other shore, with that asked then replying, immediately spoke this verse,

「忍辱得端正,施莲花化生,
法施知宿命,汝当如是解。」
‘With patience attains uprightness,
with giving from a lotus flower manifesting birth,
and with the Dharma giving knowing past lives,
you should thus understand.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何得成就,【4】三昧【5】陀罗尼?
凡有【6】所发言,皆令人信受?」
‘How to attain accomplishment,
of [4] samādhi and [5] dharanis?
How to have all [6] that spoken,
all leading people to believe and accept them?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「修心得三昧,忍获陀罗尼,
敬重于众生,发言人信受。」
‘With cultivation of the mind attains samādhi,
with forbearance obtains dharanis,
and with reverence of sentient beings,
spokespersons will be believed and accepted.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何得【7】正念?【8】具足智慧生?
【9】如法而修行,坚固不可坏?」
‘How to attain [7] Right Mindfulness?
With [8] complete wisdom arising?
How to [9] accord with the Dharma then cultivate practices,
with firmness that cannot be destroyed?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「不谄得正念,巧观智慧生,
尊重所修行,护法心坚固。」
‘With not flattering attains Right Mindfulness,
with skilful contemplation wisdom arises,
and with respect of those cultivated practices,
protecting the Dharma’s mind is firm.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何成【10】妙相,具足三十二,
八十随形好,观者乐无厌?」
‘How to accomplish [10] wonderful forms,
complete with the thirty-two,
and eighty form-following excellences,
with those contemplating joyful without weariness?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「由施得诸相,行慈获随好,
等心于众生,观者无厌足。」
‘Due to giving attains all [wonderful] forms,
with practising loving-kindness obtains [form-]following excellences,
and with equanimous mind for sentient beings,
those contemplating will be without weariness.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何得【11】梵音、【12】迦陵频伽声?
云何令世间,【13】见者皆欢喜?」
‘How to attain [11] brahmas’ voice,
and [12] kalaviṅkas’ voice?
How to cause the world,
[13] those seeing to all be joyful?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「诚言获梵音,迦陵由软语,
离绮言两舌,见者皆欢喜。」
‘With sincere words obtains brahmas’ voice,
kalaviṅkas from gentle and tactful speech arise,
and with departure from frivolous words and double-tongued speech,
those seeing will all be joyful.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「由何等业行,得【14】生诸佛前,
能请微妙义?唯愿如来说。」
‘Due to what kind of karmic deeds,
attains [14] birth before all Buddhas,
to be able to request subtle and wonderful meanings?
I only wish the Thus Come One to speak on this.’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「于诸法施中,不曾为障碍,
因此故恒得,值遇诸如来。」
‘Within all Dharma-giving,
not once by obstacles obstructed,
due to this thus constantly attaining,
encountering of all Thus Come Ones.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何【15】离诸难,而生于善趣?
云何【16】世世中,性常无放逸?」
‘How to [15] depart from all difficulties,
and be born in good realms?
How to, [16] from life to life within,
have nature constantly without laxity?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「净信离诸难,持戒生善趣,
由修习于空,所生无放逸。」
‘With pure faith departing from all difficulties,
with upholding of precepts born in good realms,
and due to practices relying on emptiness,
in those places born without laxity.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何获【17】神通,及证【18】宿命智,
能永【19】尽诸漏?愿佛为开演。」
‘How to obtain [17] supernormal powers,
and realise [18] past lives’ knowledge,
to be able to forever [19] end all outflows?
I wish the Buddha will for this expound.’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「施乘得神通,教授成宿命,
舍离于二边,由是尽诸漏。」
‘With giving multiplied attains supernormal powers,
with instructing accomplishes past lives’ knowledge,
and with abandoning of the two extremes,
due to this ending all outflows.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何【20】净业成,魔网不能羂,
而于【21】世世中,为众之所爱?」
‘How to have [20] pure karmas accomplished,
that demonic webs are not able to trap,
and [21] from life to life within,
be by many as that loved?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,

「胜解成净业,精进摧伏魔,
如说而修行,所生令众爱。」
‘With supreme understanding accomplishes pure karmas,
with diligence subdues demons,
and according with that spoken then cultivating practices,
in those places born, leading to being by many loved.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何得【22】长寿,获【23】少病之身,
感【24】难坏眷属?愿牟尼宣说。」
‘How to attain [22] long life,
obtain [23] bodies of less sicknesses,
and connect to [24] difficult-to-break family members?
May the Muni [i.e. sage] instruct.’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「不害得长寿,除他忧少病,
诤讼使和安,得难坏眷属。」
‘With not harming attains long life,
with eliminating of others’ worries having less sicknesses,
with contested trials able to have harmony and peace,
attaining difficult-to-break family members.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何得【25】财富,【26】资具无损减,
【27】于世世所生,成就大威德?」
‘How to attain [25] wealth,
with [26] resources and instruments without decrease,
[27] in life after life where born,
accomplishing great majestic virtue?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「不嫉获财富,无悭资具增,
谦下成尊贵,有威德自在。」
‘With not being jealous obtains wealth,
without miserliness will resources and instruments increase,
and with humility accomplishes honour,
having majestic virtue and ease.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何获【28】大力,众魔不能害,
【29】威势常超胜?唯愿人尊说。」
‘How to obtain [28] great power,
with all demons not able to harm,
with [29] might and influence constantly surpassingly excellent?
I only wish Humans’ Honoured One will speak on this.’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「恒施上味食,恐怖令安隐,
由斯得大力,威势常超胜。」
‘With constant giving of superior tasting food,
fear will be caused to become tranquillity,
due to this attaining great power,
with might and influence constantly surpassingly excellent.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何得成就,【30】天眼及【31】天耳?
云何能【32】了知,种种众生心?」
‘How to attain accomplishment,
of the [30] heavenly eye and [31] heavenly ear?
How to be able to [32] completely know,
all kinds of sentient beings’ minds?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「施灯感天眼,奉乐成天耳,
远离于二边,故获他心智。」
‘With giving of light connecting to the heavenly eye,
with offering of music accomplishing the heavenly ear,
and with far departure from the two extremes,
thus obtains understanding of others’ minds.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何得【33】净土,及以【34】众圆满,
【35】获随体圆光?功德海当说。」
‘How to attain a [33] Pure Land,
and with its [34] assembly perfect,
[35] obtaining the halo that follows the body?
May the meritorious virtues’ ocean be spoken.’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「由愿得净土,忍力众成就,
施众妙宝帐,得周遍圆光。」
‘Due to the vow to attain a Pure Land,
with forbearance’s power is all accomplished,
and with giving of many wonderful treasures’ canopies,
attains the halo that shines everywhere.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何【36】所生处,菩提心不坏,
乃至于梦中,亦无有忘失?」
‘How to be [36] at those born places,
with the Bodhi Mind not destroyed,
and even within dreams,
also without having it forgotten and lost?’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「凡所游行处,城邑聚落中,
化众趣菩提,菩提心不坏。」
‘With all those travelled places,
cities and villages within,
transforming all realms with Bodhi,
the Bodhi Mind will not be destroyed.’
王子又问:
The Prince again asked,
「云何大牟尼,【37】为众之所爱,
【38】摄取一切法?唯愿人尊说。」
‘How is the Great Muni,
[37] by many as that loved,
able to [38] gather and obtain all dharmas?
I only wish Humans’ Honoured One will speak on this.’
世尊答曰:
The World-Honoured One replied,
「胜志乐具足,不退菩提心,
由此摄诸法,为众之所爱。」
‘With the supreme aspiration having joy complete,
is the non-retrogressing Bodhi Mind,
due to this gathering all dharmas,
by many as that loved.’
尔时王子与诸大众闻是偈已咸作是言:「如佛所说此诸妙行,我等从今尽当修学。」
At that time, the Prince and all in the great assembly, having heard these verses already, all made this statement, ‘According with the Buddha, with that spoken, all these wonderful practices, I and others from today will completely cultivate and learn them.’
