念师长恩
[3] Mindfulness [Of Our] Teachers’ [And] Seniors’ Kindness
云何念师长恩?父母虽能生育我身,若无世间师长,则不知礼义;若无出世师长,则不解佛法。
Why [be] mindful [of our] teachers’ [and] seniors’ kindness? [My] father [and] mother, although able [to] give birth to [and] nurture my body, if without worldly [i.e. secular] teachers [and] seniors, then not knowing propriety [and] righteousness. If without world-transcending [i.e. spiritual] teachers [and] seniors, then not understanding [the] Buddha’s Dharma.
不知礼义,则同于异类;不解佛法,则何异俗人?
Not knowing propriety [and] righteousness, then [the] same as [a] different species [of beings]. Not understanding [the] Buddha’s Dharma, then how [am I] different [from a] common person?
今我等粗知礼义,略解佛法,袈裟被体,戒品沾身,此之重恩,从师长得。
Now [that] myself [and] others roughly know propriety [and] righteousness, [and] briefly understand [the] Buddha’s Dharma, [with] kāṣāya [robes] covering [our] bodies, [with the various] kinds [of] precepts benefitting ourselves, of this heavy kindness, [it is] from teachers [and] seniors attained.
若求小果,仅能自利。
If seeking [the] small fruit [of attainment, we are] only able [to have] self-benefits.
今为大乘,普愿利人,则世出世间二种师长俱蒙利益。
Now, as [those of the] Great Vehicle, [we should] universally vow [to] benefit people, then [with the] two kinds [of] worldly [and] world-transcending teachers [and] seniors together receiving benefits.
是为发菩提心第三因缘也。
[This] is for giving rise [to the] Bodhi Mind, [the] third cause [and] condition.
