[81] Methods Of Giving Rise To Aspiration After Mindfulness Of Buddha 念佛发愿法

[81] Methods [Of] Giving Rise [To] Aspiration [After] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha

Giving rise [to] Aspiration [i.e. ‘making of vows’], should [be] when morning [and/or] evening [practice(s) of] mindfulness [of the] Buddha[‘s name (Āmítuófó)] end[s].

([For practice of] ‘Early Morning’s Ten Recitations’, likewise first [be] mindful [of] Buddha, [with] giving rise [of] Aspiration after.)

Perhaps using [the] ‘Short Pure Land Verses’ [i.e. ‘Repentance Master Cíyún’s Pure Land Verses’《慈云忏主净土文》].

If [the] body [and] mind have spare time, [you] should use Great Master Liánchí’s ‘Newly Defined Pure Land Verses’ [i.e. ‘Verses (For) Giving Rise (To) Aspiration (For Birth In The) Western (Pure Land)’《西方发愿文》. As] these verses’ phrases [and] principles [are] comprehensive, [they are] as ancient [and] modern [times’] foremost [Aspiration Verses].

[It] must [be] known [that when] giving rise [to] Aspiration reading [the] verses, [it is] thus enabling, according [to] the] verses, [to] give rise [to] Aspiration, not with reading [the] verses one time, immediately as giving rise [to] Aspiration.

[Note 1: When with proper Practice (行) of mindfulness of Buddha (念佛), it is already powered by Faith (信) and Aspiration (愿). However, reciting Aspiration Verses (发原文) help to express giving rise of Aspiration (发愿) more sincerely, clearly, firmly and formally. (To have Aspiration, there has to be Faith first, with the both of which, there should be Practice.)]

[Note 2: Before practice of mindfulness of Buddha, there can be practice of repentance (忏悔) to settle the mind with the ‘Repentance Verse’《忏悔文》first, for more settled and fruitful mindfulness of Buddha next, followed by dedication (回向) of meritorious virtues with the ‘Merits’ Dedication Verse’《回向文》. In a way, fuller Aspiration Verses already contain the essence of dedication.]
