念佛之秘诀
[72] [The] Secret Of [Success For] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha
净土法门，绝无口传心授之事，任人于经教著述中自行领会，无不得者。
[The] Pure Land Dharma Door [is] absolutely without [the] practice of [having] oral transmission [for] teaching. Any person, from [the] sūtras’ teachings [and] compilations of writings within, [with] personal practice [having] understanding, [is] without one not attaining [it].
当唐宋时，尚有传佛心印之法，今则只一历代源流而已。名之为法，亦太可怜，净宗绝无此事。
When [from the] Táng [to the] Sòng [Dynasties, they] still had [the] Dharma of transmitting [the] Buddha’s mind seal. Now then, only [having] one successive dynasty [from the] source [to the] direction of flow only. [To] name that as [the] Dharma, [is] likewise too pitiful, [while the] Pure [Land] Tradition [is] absolutely without this practice.
来山尚不如看书之有益。古人云：「见面不如闻名。」即来，与座下说者，仍是《文钞》中话，岂另有特别奥妙之秘法乎？
Coming [to the] mountain [is] still not as good, [as] beneficial [as] that [of] reading books. Ancient people said, ‘Meeting face [to face is] not as good [as] hearing [one’s] name.’ Since [having] come, for those [at the] seat below speaking, [I] still [speak the] ‘Collected Writings’ words within. How can it be [that there] is another secret method that [is] special, mysterious [and] wonderful?
十余年前，与吴璧华书，末云：「有一秘诀，剀切相告，竭诚尽敬，妙妙妙妙。」
More [than] ten years ago, for Wú Bìhuá’s letter, [at the] end [I] wrote, ‘[There] is one secret [of success for reaching Pure Land, to] earnestly inform one another. [It is to have] wholehearted sincerity [with] utmost reverence [when practising mindfulness of Āmítuófó’s name, which is most] wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!’
信愿行三，为净土纲要。都摄六根，为念佛秘诀。知此二者，更不须再问人矣。
Faith, Aspiration [and] Practice, [these] three, are [the] Pure Land [Dharma Door’s] essential points. Gathering all six roots, is mindfulness [of] Buddha’s secret. Those knowing these two [teachings], furthermore [do] not need [to] again ask people.
