念佛之宗，根本，实义与功夫
[64] [The] Principles, Root, True Meaning [And] Skill [Of] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha
念佛法门，以信愿行三法为宗；
[The] Dharma Door [Of] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha, [is] with Faith, Aspiration [and] Practice, [these] three Dharma [teachings] as [its] principles.
以菩提心为根本；
With [the] Bodhi Mind [i.e. Bodhicitta] as root.
[Note 1: As the Pure Land Tradition’s 9th Patriarch Great Master Ǒuyì (净土宗九祖蕅益大师) taught in ‘The Essential Explanation Of The Sūtra In Which The Buddha Speaks Of Amitābha Buddha’《佛说阿弥陀经要解》, ‘With profound Faith giving rise to the Aspiration (to be born in Pure Land), this then is unsurpassable Bodhi(citta).’ (深信发愿，即无上菩提。)]
以是心作佛，是心是佛，为因该果海，果彻因源之实义；
With ‘this mind becomes Buddha, this mind is Buddha’, as [the] true meaning of ‘[with the] cause possessing [the] effect’s ocean, [and the] effect pervading [the] cause’s source’.
以都摄六根，净念相继，为下手最切要之功夫。由是而行，再能以四宏誓愿，常不离心。
With ‘gathering all six roots, [with] pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession’, as [the] skill of starting, [this is] most essential. Because [of] this then practising, in addition [be] able [to be] with [the] Four Great Vows, constantly not departing [from the] mind.
[Note 2: The Four Great Vows (四弘誓愿), which contain the Bodhi Mind’s (菩提心) essence are:
(i) 众生无边誓愿度: Of sentient beings boundless, I vow to deliver them.
(ii) 烦恼无尽誓愿断: Of afflictions inexhaustible, I vow to sever them.
(iii) 法门无量誓愿学: Of Dharma doors immeasurable, I vow to learn them.
(iv) 佛道无上誓愿成: Of the Buddha path unsurpassable, I vow to accomplish it.]
则心与佛合，心与道合，现生即入圣流，临终直登上品，庶不负此生矣。
Then [is the] mind with [the] Buddha together, [the] mind with [the] path together, [in this] present life immediately entering [the] noble stream, [when] approaching [life’s] end directly ascending [a] high grade, hopefully not betraying this life.
