唐张善和
[21] Táng [Dynasty’s] Zhāng Shànhé
善和，杀牛为业。
Shànhé, [was with] killing cows as [his] livelihood.
临终见牛数头，作人言云：「汝杀我！」
[When] approaching [life’s] end, [he] saw [a] number [of] cows, making [a] human voice saying, ‘You killed us!’
善和大恐，告妻云：「急请僧来救我。」
Shànhé [had] great fear, [and] told [his] wife, ‘Quickly invite [a] monastic [to] come save me.’
僧至云：「《十六观经》说，若人临终，地狱相现。至心十称南谟阿弥陀佛，即得往生净土。」
[A] monastic arrived [and] said, ‘[The] Sixteen Contemplations’ Sūtra said, [that] if [a] person approaching [life’s] end, [has] hell’s forms appearing, [with the] utmost sincere mind recites “Námó Āmítuófó”, [the person will] immediately attain rebirth [in] Pure Land.’
善和云：「便入地狱也。」不暇取香炉，即以左手擎火，右手拈香，面西专切念佛。
Shànhé said, ‘[I am] right away entering hell!’ Having no time [to] take [an] incense censer, immediately with [his] left hand holding up fire, [with his] right hand burning [the] incense, [he] faced [the] West [with] focused [and] sincere recitation [of the] Buddha[‘s name].
未满十声，乃云：「我见阿弥陀佛从西来，与我宝座。」言讫而终。
Yet [to] fulfil ten recitations, [he] then said, ‘I see Amitā[bha] Buddha from [the] West coming, with my treasure seat.’ [With these] words completed, [he] then departed.
