食肉说
[16] Speaking [Of] Meat-Eating
《楞伽经》云：「有无量因缘，不当食肉。」
[The] Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says, ‘[There] are immeasurable causes [and] conditions, [for which there] should not [be] eating [of] meat.’
众生肉本非所食之物，以耳闻目见惯熟，不知其非。
Sentient beings’ meat [is] originally not that food for eating, with [the] ears hearing [and the] eyes seeing [it], habitually familiarised, not knowing this error.
如能断去，固为上也。
If able [to] sever [it] away, [this is] certainly as supreme.
如不能断，且食三净肉而减省。所谓不见杀、不闻杀、不疑为己杀是也。
If not able [to] sever, also eating threefold pure meat, then reducing [further. This] is so-called [meat, from] not seeing [the] killing, not hearing [the] killing, [and] not suspecting [it to be] for oneself [with] killing.
[Note 1: Threefold pure meat is actually very difficult to find, as purchased meat is beyond doubt supplied for its consumers, thus going against the last condition. It is thus best to avoid eating meat entirely.]
如食兼味，且去其一。
If eating simultaneously [for] tasting, also giving up [the] first.
如两餐皆肉，且一餐以素。人生禄料有数，若此自可延寿。
If [with] two meals, all [with] meat, also [with] one meal as veg[etari]an. [As] human life’s good fortune [and] food have [that] numbered, if [with] this, naturally can [there be] extending [of] life.
次日可为此众生念诵资荐，庶可释冤灭罪。
[The] next day, [there] can [be] for these sentient beings [eaten] reciting [and] giving offerings. Hopefully, [there] can [be] releasing [by those with] grievances [and] eliminating [of] transgressions.
[Note 2: If there is no eating of sentient beings, there will be no need for this ‘hoping’. Any offerings made should not be with sentient beings’ meat and produce as ingredients.]
据阎罗王告郑邻之言，则至诚为彼念佛，必得往生。
According [to the] words of [what] King Yama told Zhèng Lín, thus [with] utmost sincerity for them reciting [the] Buddha’s [name], definitely attaining rebirth [in the Pure Land].
