[17] Speaking Of Guānyīn’s Seated Form 观音坐相说

观音坐相说
[17] Speaking [Of] Guānyīn’s Seated Form

按藏经诸佛菩萨,手、足、六根皆常端正,故云八端。

According [to the Great] Treasury [Of] Sūtras, [of] all Buddhas [and] Bodhisattvas, [their] hands, feet [and] six roots [are] all constantly upright, thus called [the] Eight Uprightnesses.

观世音菩萨本结跏趺坐,其神通变化自在,故云观自在。

Guānshìyīn Bodhisattva originally forms crossed legs [in the] lotus posture’s seat, [with] her supernormal [powers of] transformation [with] ease, thus called [the] ‘Contemplator [With] Ease’.

今人作翘足搭手坐,谓自在观音者,讹也。

Nowadays, people make [her image with] standing on tiptoes, [with] hands joined together seated, calling that ‘Ease[ful] Contemplator [Of] Sounds’, [this is an] error.

[Note: The image above, although from the Sòng Dynasty, does not correspond with the errors stated.]
