[6] Three Bodhisattvas [Who] Cultivated [To Reach] Tuṣita

智者《十疑论》云:「三菩萨修兜率,一名无著,二名世亲,三名师子觉。约云:『先生兜率见弥勒者,即来相报。』

[Great Master] Zhìzhě [in his] Treatise [On] Ten Doubts [About Pure Land]《净土十疑论》says, ‘Three Bodhisattvas cultivated [to reach] Tuṣita [Heaven’s Inner Court (内院), with the] first named Asaṅga, [the] second named Vasubandhu, [and the] third named Buddhasiṃha [i.e. Lion Awakening]. [They made an] agreement, saying, “He [who is] first born [in] Tuṣita, [who] sees Maitreya [Bodhisattva, will] immediately come [to] report [this to the] others.”

师子觉先亡,数年无报。次世亲亡,三年乃来报云:『天日长。我生兜率,礼弥勒佛,听其说法,即来相报,已三年矣。』

Buddhasiṃha first died, [for] several years without [a] report. Next, Vasubandhu died, [whom] three years [later], then came [to] report, saying, “[That] heaven’s day [is] long. [When] I [was] born [in] Tuṣita, prostrated [to] Maitreya, [and] listened [to] him speak [the] Dharma, then coming [to] report to you, [it was] already three years.”

问:『师子觉如何?』

[Asaṅga] asked, “How [is] Buddhasiṃha?”

云:『生兜率外院,恋著天乐,即不曾见佛。』」

[Vasubandhu] said, “[He was] born [in] Tuṣita’s Outer Court, [and is] attached [to] heavenly joys, thus not yet seeing [the future] Buddha.”‘

且以菩萨而修兜率,犹有恋著不见佛者,此轮回之根本。是知兜率难修有坠,非比西方易修无坠也。

Moreover, with Bodhisattvas then cultivating [to reach] Tuṣita, those [who] still have attachment [do] not see [the future] Buddha, [with] this [as the] root of [further] rebirth. [From this] is [it] known [that for reaching] Tuṣita, [it is] difficult [to] cultivate, [and] has [those] falling, not comparable [with reaching the] Western [Pure Land, which is] easy [to] cultivate, [and] without falling.

智者又云:「有见释迦佛而不得道者,若修西方见阿弥陀佛,无不得道。」

[Great Master] Zhìzhě also said, ‘[There] are those [who] saw Śākyamuni Buddha, yet not attaining [the] path. If cultivating [to reach the] Western [Pure Land to] see Amitā[bha] Buddha, [it is] without [those] not attaining [the] path.’

则释迦佛与阿弥陀佛其愿力所加,固不同矣。

Thus [with] Śākyamuni Buddha and Amitā[bha] Buddha, [with] their vows’ power, those added, [they are] certainly not [the] same.

故大慈菩萨云:「十方三世佛,阿弥陀第一。」念其名号,消一切罪,遂生净土。宜哉。

Thus [did] Dàcí [i.e. Great Loving-kindness] Bodhisattva say, ‘[Of the] ten directions’ three periods’ Buddhas, Amitā[bha] Buddha [is the] foremost.’ [With] mindfulness [of] his name, eliminating all transgressions, thereupon [with] birth [in his] Pure Land. [There should be] no doubt.
