[5] [Birth In The] Western [Pure Land Is] Like Presently Receiving [An] Official [Post]
For example, [a] person has [an] official [post], yet [does] not accept [it, as he has] definite desire [to] study, [to be] as [a] great leading [scholar] [状元]. His ambition [is] no doubt praiseworthy. However, [that rank as a] great leading [scholar] cannot [be] definitely attained.
[This is] definitely not as good as also accepting that official [post], simultaneously studying. If attaining [as a] great leading [scholar], then like [on] brocade above adding flowers [i.e. making it better]. If not attaining it, not losing his [post] as [an] official.
修西方者,且受官之谓也;
[1] Those cultivating [to reach the] Western [Pure Land, are] also those called [with] accepting [of that] official [post] too.
一面修学者,兼以参禅之谓也;
[2] Those simultaneously studying, [are] those called simultaneously with Chán contemplation, [who practise Self-powered meditation] too.
不得大魁者,参禅未悟之谓也;
[3] Those not attaining [as] great leading [scholars, are] those called [with] Chán contemplation, [who are] yet [to be] awakened too.
[4] Those not losing their [posts] as officials, [are] those called [with] direct liberation [from] rebirth, [to] greatly receive happiness [and] bliss too.
Since [with] birth [in the] Western [Pure Land], seeing [the] Buddha [and] hearing [the] Dharma, how [can there] not be great awakening? Thus, speaking of [the] Western [Pure Land, it] truly cannot [be] abandoned.
