[01] [The First Contemplation: Sun’s Contemplation]
佛告韦提希:「汝及众生,应当专心系念一处,想于西方。云何作想?
[The] Buddha told Vaidehī, ‘You and [other] sentient beings, should focus [your] minds [with] continual mindfulness single-pointedly, [to have] contemplation of [the] West. How [to] do [this] contemplation?
凡作想者,一切众生,自非生盲,有目之徒,皆见日没。当起想念,正坐西向,谛观于日欲没之处,令心坚住,专想不移。见日欲没,状如悬鼓。
Of all those doing contemplation, all sentient beings, naturally not born blind, disciples [who] have sight, [should] all see [the] sun set. [They] should give rise [to this] contemplated thought, upright seated westward, [with] attentive contemplating of [the] place [where the] sun almost sets, enabling [their] minds [to] firmly abide, [with] focused contemplation not moving. Seeing [the] sun almost setting, shaped like [a] suspended drum.
既见日已,闭目开目,皆令明了,是为日想,名曰初观。
Completely seeing [the] sun already, [with] closed eyes [and] opened eyes, all enabled [to be] clearly understood, [this] is [known] as Sun’s Contemplation, named [the] First Contemplation.
