Below is the fifth of the last seven questions and answers in the Rebirth Treatise’s Commentary’s Lower Scroll, as titled for easier reference.]
[5] 为何诽谤正法是重罪？
Why Is Slander Of The Dharma A Heavy Transgression?
问曰：如是等计，但是己事，于众生有何苦恼，逾于五逆重罪耶？
Question: [Of] such compared [and] calculated, [this ‘slander of the right Dharma’] however is [a] personal matter. Of [other] sentient beings, [they] have what suffering [and] afflictions [as a result, such that this slander] exceeds of [the] Five Heinous [Transgressions as a] heavier transgression?
答曰：若无诸佛菩萨说世间出世间善道，教化众生者，岂知有仁义礼智信耶？
Answer: If without all Buddhas [and] Bodhisattvas speaking [of] worldly [and] world-transcending good paths, [to] teach [and] transform those sentient beings, how can [they] know, [to] have benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom [and] trustworthiness?
如是世间一切善法皆断，出世间一切贤圣皆灭。
Thus [are] all worldly good Dharmas all severed, [and] world-transcending virtuous noble [ones] all ‘eradicated’.
汝但知五逆罪为重，而不知五逆罪从无正法生。
You only know [the] Five Heinous Transgressions as heavy, yet not knowing [the] Five Heinous Transgressions, [are] from [being] without [the] right Dharma, [that are] born.
是故谤正法人，其罪最重。
Therefore, [of] people [who] slander [the] right Dharma, their transgressions [are the] most heavy.
