Answer: According to the Pure Land Tradition’s 9th Patriarch Great Master Ǒuyì’s ‘Essential Explanation [Of The] Amitā[bha] Sūtra As Spoken [By The] Buddha’, ‘blue coloured [lotus flowers are] named [as] “Utpalas”‘, with ‘Utpala’ being Sanskrit for (deep) blue lotus flowers. In ancient times, that ‘青‘ is (deep) blue in colour, and should not be confused with today’s usage of the word.
