不能自反为入道之障
[297] Not [Being] Able [To] Self-Reflect Is [The] Obstacle Of Entering [The] Path
夫人宿世果种善根，且无论为学求道，可为出世大事之前茅。
If really [as] those persons [who have in their] past lives planted good roots, moreover, regardless of whether for learning [or] seeking [the] path, [they] can be those top-ranking [for the] great matter [of] world-transcendence.
即贪瞋痴等烦恼惑业，疾病颠连种种恶报，皆可以作出生死入佛法之因缘，顾其人之能自反与否耳。
Even if [with] greed, anger, ignorance [and] others, afflictions, confusions, [evil] karmas, sicknesses, poverty [and] all kinds [of] evil retribution, all [these] can become causes [and] conditions of exiting [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, [and] entering [the] Buddha’s Dharma, considering whether these persons [have] that ability [to] self-reflect or not only.
不能自反，且无论碌碌庸人，为世教之所拘。即晦庵、阳明、靖节、放翁等，虽学问、操持、见地，悉皆奇特卓荦。然亦究竟不能彻悟自心，了脱生死。
[If] not able [to] self-reflect, moreover, regardless of whether [as] busy mediocre persons, [as] those by worldly teachings constrained, [or] even [as] Huì’ān [i.e. Zhūxī (朱熹)], Yángmíng [i.e. Wáng Shǒurén (王守仁)], Jìngjié [i.e. Táo Yuānmíng (陶渊明)], Fàngwēng [i.e. Lù Yóu (陆游)] [and] others, although [with] knowledge, integrity [and] insights, all remarkable [and] outstanding, thus also in the end, [are] not able [to have] penetrating awakening [of] one’s mind, [to be] liberated [from the cycle of] birth [and] death.
其学问、操持、见地，虽可与无上妙道作基，由不能自反，竟为入道之障。
[With] their knowledge, integrity [and] insights, although [they] can [be] for [the] unsurpassable wonderful path, as [its] foundation, due [to] not [being] able [to] self-reflect, in the end, [they] became obstacles of entering [the] path.
可知入道之难，真难于登天矣。
[From this, it] can [be] known [that the] difficulty of entering [the] path, [is] truly [more] difficult than ascending [to the] heavens.
