以信愿持名最为要紧
[43] With Faith [And] Aspiration Upholding [The] Name Is [The] Most Important
须知西方极乐世界，莫说凡夫不能到，即小乘圣人亦不能到，以彼系大乘不思议境界故也。小圣回心向大即能到。
[It] should [be] known [that of the] Western Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss, not speaking [of] ordinary beings not [being] able [to] reach [it], even [if as the] Small Vehicle’s noble persons, [they are] also not able [to] reach [it], with that connected [to the] Great Vehicle’s inconceivable realm thus. [Those of the] Small Vehicle turning [their] minds towards [the] great [are] then able [to] reach [it].
凡夫若无信愿感佛，纵修其余一切胜行，并持名胜行，亦不能往生。是以信愿最为要紧。
Ordinary beings, if without Faith [and] Aspiration connecting [to the] Buddha, even if cultivating all those other excellent practices, also [with] upholding [of the] name’s excellent practice, [they are] also not able [to be] reborn [in the Pure Land]. Therefore, Faith [and] Aspiration are [the] most important.
蕅益云：「得生与否，全由信愿之有无。品位高下，全由持名之深浅。」乃千佛出世不易之铁案也。
[The Pure Land Tradition’s 9th Patriarch Great Master] Ǒuyì [净土宗九祖蕅益大师] said, ‘Attaining birth or not, completely depends on Faith [and] Aspiration [being] present [or] absent. [The] grade [of birth being] high [or] low, completely depends on [the Practice of] upholding [the] name [of Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛) being] deep [or] shallow.’ And even [if a] thousand Buddhas arise [in the] world, this [is an] unchanging [and] irrefutable verdict.
能信得及，许汝西方有分。
[If] able [to have] Faith attained in time, perhaps you, [for birth in the] Western [Pure Land, will] have [a] part.
