Why Did Śākyamuni Buddha Constantly Encourage Mindfulness Of Amitābha Buddha?
Question: Should there only be mindfulness of our Fundamental Teacher’s sacred name, out of gratitude, to ‘follow his example’ and remember him, while not being mindful of Amitābha Buddha (i.e. Āmítuófó)?
Answer: If relying on that the Buddha spoke, with the teachings within his sūtras, as the root sources of the Buddha’s teachings, there should be the below understanding.

With gratitude to the World-Honoured One, who without being asked, personally spoke the Amitābha Sūtra, saying that ‘those sentient beings who hear this, should vow, vowing to be born in that [Pure] Land’ [of Amitābha Buddha].

It must be remembered that our Fundamental Teacher, in the Contemplation Sūtra, said that ‘if there are those mindful of [Amitābha] Buddha, you should know that these persons, are then within humans, puṇḍarīka flowers’, [who are the good (好), wonderfully good (妙好), rare (希有), highest superior (上上) and most excellent (最胜)].
Have Excellent Friends To Be Excellent Humans
We should rely on the Buddha’s teachings for practice, who in the Immeasurable Life Sūtra, said that we should, ‘with focused minds, faithfully accept, uphold and recite the said practices’, for rebirth in Amitābha Buddha’s Pure Land, to quickly accomplish Right Awakening.

Follow the examples of all Buddhas, as the Ocean-Like Samādhi [From Contemplation Of Buddha] Sūtra (观佛三昧海经) said, who ‘due to this power of Samādhi From Mindfulness Of Buddha thus, attained all-knowing wisdom, majestic supernormal powers and ease’.

Śākyamuni Buddha, in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, said that ‘of all, the Dharma Body Buddha, Reward Body Buddhas, Manifestation Body Buddhas and Transformation Body Buddhas, all from Immeasurable Life Buddha’s Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss within emerge’.
