今心偈
Verse On The Present Mind
念佛即是,今心即佛。
Mindfulness of Buddha is to have the present mind being aligned to be the ‘same’ as the Buddha.
是心作佛,是心是佛。
‘It is the mind that becomes Buddha, and it is the mind that is Buddha.’
[Note 1: To practise Niànfó (念佛) is to have verbal and/or mental mindfulness of Buddha with recitation of his name ‘Āmítuófó’ (阿弥陀佛) now.]
[Note 2: While verbal recitation needs to arise from mental mindfulness, mental recitation needs not be expressed with verbal recitation. The latter is especially important to note for the very old, sick and dying, who should not be attached to verbal recitation, as they might not be able to practise it well with their present or soon coming conditions.]
[Note 3: There should not be abandoning of mindfulness of Buddha just because verbal recitation cannot be practised well. When already very old, sick and dying, all the more should they practise mindful mental recitation sincerely, diligently and regularly, as time is running out.]
