宋江陵僧昙鉴
[5] [Liú] Sòng [Dynasty’s] Jiānglíng’s Monastic Tánjiàn
昙鉴，履行尤谨，常愿身升安养，面见阿弥陀佛。安养即净土也。故虽毫芒之善，悉回向之。
Tánjiàn, fulfilled [his] practices especially cautiously, constantly aspiring [to have his] body ascend [to the Land Of] Nurturing Peace, [to] face [and] see Amitā[bha] Buddha [i.e. Āmítuófó]. [The Land Of] Nurturing Peace is the same as [his] Pure Land. Thus, although [even with a] fine hair tip of good, [he would] dedicate it all [for reaching Pure Land].
一日，定中见阿弥陀佛，以水洒其面曰：「涤汝尘垢，清汝心念，汝之身、口俱致严净。」又于瓶中出一莲华与之。
One day, within concentration, [he] saw Amitā[bha] Buddha, with water sprinkling [on] his face, saying, ‘Wash [away] your dust [and] dirt [i.e. defilements], purify your mind’s thoughts, your this body, [and with your] mouth together, attain majestic purity.’ Also from [a] vase within, arose a lotus flower given [to] him.
出定，乃与寺僧叙别。夜渐深，独步廊下念阿弥陀佛，将至五更，其声弥厉。
Exiting concentration, [he] then with [the] monastery’s monastics said farewell. [With] night gradually deepening, [he] alone walked down [a] corridor [while] reciting Āmítuófó. [When] about [to] reach [the] fifth watch [i.e. 3 a.m.], his voice [became] extensive [and] clear.
及旦，弟子依常问讯，趺坐不动，就而视之，亡矣。
Reaching dawn, [when his] disciples according to custom with joined palms and a half-bow greeted [him, he was] sitting [in the] lotus posture unmoving. Approaching then [to] see him, [he had already] departed.
