[(i) (In The) Early Morning, First Facing (The) West, Burning Incense (And) Prostrating…]
[In the] early morning, first facing [the] West, burning incense [and] prostrating, [with this] prayer saying, [1] ‘Disciple so-and-so, sincerely for all sentient beings exhausting empty space, burn incense [and] reverently prostrate [to] all Buddhas exhausting empty space, all Right Dharma, all noble assemblies [of] Great Bodhisattvas, [those by] Conditions Awakened [and] Voice-Hearers, [the] past Lamp Light[er] Buddha, [our] fundamental teacher Śākyamuni Buddha, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, Universal Virtue Bodhisattva, Śākya[muni] Buddha’s assemblies [of] all Bodhisattvas, [those by] Conditions Awakened [and] Voice-Hearers, [the] past King [Of The] World [At] Ease Thus Come [One, the] present Western Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss’ three hundred and sixty thousand (360,000) koṭis [of] one hundred and nineteen thousand five hundred (119,500) similarly named [and] similarly titled Amitā[bha] Buddha, Contemplator [Of The] World’s Sounds Bodhisattva, Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva, Amitā[bha] Buddha’s land’s all Bodhisattvas within, [those by] Conditions Awakened [and] Voice-Hearers ([the] Buddha’s name [can] as wished, [with] that increased, [with] not increasing, [this] also can [be done]). [To the] above, from all heavens’ heavenly emperors [and] heavenly beings, [the] sun, moon [and] stars, [the] Southern Dipper [i.e. six stars in Sagittarius] [and] Northern Dipper [i.e. Big Dipper], Overseer [Of That] Within [and] Overseer [Of] Destiny, Wind Master [and] Rain Master, [and] all masters [of] nature’s gods, down to earth spirits, great mountains’ [and] dark seas’, mountain ranges’ [and] all rivers’ all masters [of] nature’s gods, and [the] middle human world’s all gods in charge [of] disasters [and] blessings, universally together reverently prostrating, hoping [to] accomplish all good aspirations, with ferrying [and] delivering [of] immeasurable boundless sentient beings. First wishing so-and-so, presently living [in this] life, [to be] without all sicknesses, disasters [and] other matters (as wished, [with] that prayed [for]). When approaching life’s end, [with] one month in advance knowing that date [of departure for Pure Land, with] manifested Buddha [and] Bodhisattvas coming [to] welcome, [and the] Western realm completely appearing within [the] sky, slowly and [over a] long [time, with] all people all seeing this, [and with] so-and-so immediately, like entering meditative concentration, peacefully departing away, thereupon seeing Amitā[bha] Buddha, realising Non-Arising [Of] Dharmas’ Forbearance, [and] understanding [the] six supernormal [powers]. Not exceeding this world’s one year, then coming [to] this world [to] teach [and] transform sentient beings, gradually changing this Southern Jambudvīpa, [with] completing [of this] Sahā World, down to [the] ten directions’ immeasurable lands, [with] all becoming [the] Pure Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss.’ Prostrate.
[Note 1: Facing West is to express a sense of spiritual direction, as expressed physically, with this not being compulsory. Offering of incense is to express reverence, which is also optional, with offering of other appropriate items possible too.
Note 2: The Land Of Ultimate Bliss and elsewhere can have many similarly named Buddhas, Buddhas-to-be and their manifestations, with similar characteristics, as the state of Buddhahood is one and universal. Based on the number stated, with one koṭi being ten million, the full number is ‘three trillion, six hundred billion, one hundred nineteen thousand and five hundred’ (3,600,000,119,500).
Note 3: There is gratitude to heavenly bodies and constellations for their ‘offering’ of light and direction.
Note 4: The ‘Overseers’ and elemental ‘Masters’ represent gods who are partially in charge of karmic and weather matters. This does not mean they have say over karma, but that they can be means through which are karma is expressed.
Note 5: To have advanced knowing of the date of departure allows ample time for settling various matters and informing others, so as to inspire them to have similar practice.
Note 6: The aspiration to return to this world in less than one year is out of great compassion, to guide others to Pure Land too.
Note 7: The last line is about attempting to purify all lands, to transform defiled lands into Pure Lands. Technically, as Pure Lands transcend defiled lands physically, although defiled lands can be purified to some extent, they are still worldly to some extent, thus not transcendental and lasting with pure characteristics like actual Pure Lands. This limitation applies to earth in the future too, even after Maitreya Bodhisattva manifests Buddhahood here. However, if personally spiritually purified, it is possible to perceive defiled lands as Pure Lands when wished, while this perception cannot be given to other defiled beings sustainably, even though it is possible to offer them brief glimpses of what one perceives purely.]
Also [with this] prayer saying, [2] ‘Disciple so-and-so, sincerely, for all sentient beings exhausting empty space, reverently prostrate [to the] three periods’ all Buddhas exhausting empty space, relying only [on the] Thus Come [Ones’] great loving-kindness [and] great compassion, sympathetically mindful [of] sentient beings sinking [in] suffering’s ocean, without having exit dates. [May] those in Parinirvāṇa, completely exit Parinirvāṇa, [to] save [and] deliver sentient beings, inexhaustibly [and] endlessly. [May] those present [in the] world, diligently turn [the] Dharma wheel, [to] awaken many confused, inexhaustibly [and] endlessly. [May] those [in the] future, enter ten thousand kinds [of beings] within, [to] widely plant good roots, inexhaustibly [and] endlessly. Delivering completely sentient beings already, then after, [with] assemblies of [those by] Conditions Awakened [and] Voice-Hearers, likewise thus.’ Prostrate.
Also [with this] prayer saying, [3] ‘Disciple so-and-so, sincerely, for all good persons exhausting empty space, recite [the] Buddha’s spoken Long Life Verse seven times, wishing [to] increase [and] extend this [and] other good persons’ lives’ ages, [to] widely transform sentient beings, [with] all transcending suffering’s ocean.
“[May] I, [with] loving-kindness [for] all Dragon Kings, [in the] heavens above and [in the] world, with my this mind [of] loving-kindness, attain elimination [of] all poisonous anger.
[May] I, with wisdom gathered, use [my] mind diligently [to] kill this poison, [be it] tasted poison [or] tasteless poison, destroying [and] eliminating away [that for] entering hell.”‘
Prostrate. [The] Buddha said, ‘[In the] early morning, [with] pure recitation [of] this seven times, enables [the] person [to have] long life.’ Now for all good persons exhausting empty space reciting, thus [are the] meritorious virtues extremely great.
[Note 8: Dragons are predominantly known for having great anger, even if with some having much wisdom. Thus are they as if a ‘hybrid’ of gods and ‘animals’. Tasted poison refers to anger that one is mindful of, and tasteless poison refers to anger that one is not mindful of.]
Also [with this] prayer saying, [4] ‘Disciple so-and-so, [with the] sincere mind reverently prostrate [to] Sun [And] Moon Bright Light World-Honoured [One] [i.e. Rìyuèguāngmíng Shìzūn], Firelight Thus Come [One] [i.e. Huǒguāng Rúlái], [and] Contemplator [Of The] World’s Sounds Bodhisattva [i.e. Guānshìyīn Púsà], hoping [you will be] mindful [of] so-and-so, [who] every day recites [the] Thus Come [Ones’ and] Bodhisattva’s names, each [for] one hundred [and] eight times, relying only [on your] great loving-kindness [and] great compassion, each with [your] vows’ power, enabling so-and-so [to] soon awaken [to] true nature, [and] increase lofty blessings’ power, without all sicknesses, disasters [and] other matters.’ With those three [sections] above, for saving [and] delivering sentient beings thus. Prostrate.
Also [with this] prayer saying, [5] ‘Disciple so-and-so, sincerely for this Southern Jambudvīpa’s all sentient beings, regardless [of the] huge [and] regardless [of the] tiny, reverently prostrate [to] all heavens’ heavenly emperors [and] heavenly beings, [the] sun, moon [and] stars, [the] Southern Dipper [and] Northern Dipper, Overseer [Of That] Within [and] Overseer [Of] Destiny, Wind Master [and] Rain Master, all masters [of] nature’s gods, all earth spirits, great mountains’ [and] dark seas’, mountain ranges’ [and] all rivers’ all masters [of] nature’s gods, [the] human world’s all gods in charge [of] disasters [and] blessings, universally together reverently prostrating, with [this] for this [and] other sentient beings, thanking [their] kindness of covering [and] carrying, shining, bearing [and] nurturing, raising [and] educating, guarding [and] protecting. So-and-so, sincerely for this [and] other sentient beings recite ‘Námó Shìjiāmóunífó’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) Śākyamuni Buddha’] one hundred [and] eight times, with [this] planting unsurpassable good roots, reciting ‘Námó Āmítuófó’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) Amitā(bha) Buddha’] one hundred [and] eight times, with [this] forming unsurpassable superior good roots. May this [and] other sentient beings constantly bathe [in] great kindness, [with] joy facing one another, not [with] one another contending, [with] one another killing, not [with] one another eating, [with] one another bullying, cultivating [to] advance [in the] Buddha’s Dharma, liberating [and] departing [from] suffering’s ocean, then changing this Southern Jambudvīpa as [the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss.’ Prostrate.
Also [with this] prayer saying, [6] ‘Disciple so-and-so, thank [all that the] sky [and] earth cover [and] carry, [the] sun, moon [and] stars [that] shine, nature [and that it] produces, gods [who] protect [and] bless, [my] father [and] mother [who] bear [and] nurture, kings [and] officials [who] shelter [and] protect, honourable teachers [who] instruct, [those who] kindly give, raise [and] assist, and those clothing’s [and] food’s sources, and those benefitting from, and those directing [and] causing [these], and those walking, standing, sitting [and] lying down, all those having kindness [and] efforts for oneself, [for] all thanking. Sincerely for [them] reciting ‘Námó Shìjiāmóunífó’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) Śākyamuni Buddha’] one hundred [and] eight times, with [this] planting unsurpassable good roots, reciting ‘Námó Āmítuófó’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) Amitā(bha) Buddha’] one hundred [and] eight times, with [this] forming unsurpassable superior good conditions. [May] all sentient [beings, with] those above, soon realise Bodhi’s right fruit, [and] those below, [at the] end [of this] life, [be] born [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss.’ Prostrate.
[With] cultivating [of] these six sections completed, afterwards facing [the] West, cultivate Pure Land [practices].
[Note 9: The Main Practice (正行) to be practised with the most time and effort is mindfulness of the Buddha’s name.]
[5] Fifth [Essay On] Great Bodhisattvas’ Cultivation [Of] Pure Land’s Dharma Door
[(ii) (In The) Early Morning, First Facing (The) West, Burning Incense (And) Prostrating…]
[In the] early morning, first facing [the] West, burning incense [and] prostrating, [with this] prayer saying, [1] ‘Disciple so-and-so, sincerely for all sentient beings exhausting empty space, reverently prostrate [to the] Western [Land’s] noble assembly, [with] ten recitations [of the] Four Noble [Beings’] names. Relying only [on the] noble assembly’s great loving-kindness [and] great compassion, specially extending [their] majestic supernormal [powers], exactly the same, [for] this [and] other sentient beings, [for] every [one], each [with] ten recitations, [to be] completely pulled up [and] ferried, [to be] born [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss.’ Then reciting [the] Four Noble [Beings’] names, each [with] ten recitations. Prostrate.
[Note 10: Recitation of the Four Noble Beings’ names are as follows:
(i) Námó Āmítuófó (i.e. 南无阿弥陀佛: Homage to [and] refuge for life [in] Amitā[bha] Buddha)
(ii) Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà (i.e. 南无观世音菩萨: Homage to [and] refuge for life [in] Contemplator [Of The] World’s Sounds Bodhisattva)
(iii) Námó Dàshìzhì Púsà (i.e. 南无大势至菩萨: Homage to [and] refuge for life [in] Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva)
(iv) Námó Yīqiè Púsà Shēngwén Zhū Shàngshànrén (i.e. 南无一切菩萨声闻诸上善人: Homage to [and] refuge for life [in] all Bodhisattvas, Voice-Hearers [and] all superior good persons)]
Also [with this] prayer saying, [2] ‘Disciple so-and-so, sincerely for all sentient beings exhausting empty space, praise Amitā[bha] Buddha, repent transgressions [and] dedicate [merits], giving rise [to] Aspiration [with] reverent prostration. Relying only [on the] Thus Come [One’s] great loving-kindness [and] great compassion, specially extending [his] majestic supernormal [powers], exactly the same, [for] this [and] other sentient beings, [for] every [one], each praising [the] Buddha, repenting transgressions [and] dedicating [merits], giving rise [to] Aspiration [with] reverent prostration, [to be] completely pulled up [and] ferried, [to be] born [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss.’ Then reciting Great Loving-Kindness Bodhisattva’s complete verses one time, in [the] First Scroll’s second section. Prostrate.
[Note 11: See these in the Second Essay at https://purelanders.com/2022/01/03/1-first-2-second-3-third-essay-on-practices-dharma-door.]
Also [with this] prayer saying, [3] ‘Disciple so-and-so, sincerely for all sentient beings exhausting empty space, reverently prostrate [to the] Western Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss’ Contemplator [Of The] World’s Sounds Bodhisattva, Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva, all Bodhisattvas, Voice-Hearers, [and] all superior good persons. Relying only [on their] great loving-kindness [and] great compassion, sympathetically mindful [of] sentient beings sinking [in] suffering’s ocean, without having exit dates, specially extending [their] majestic supernormal [powers], giving [and] encouraging one another, [with] division bodies in this Cīna-sthāna’s land [i.e. China], as prime minister [and] many ministers, together assisting my king, governing [and] teaching sentient beings, causing [them to] not [be with] one another contending, [with] one another killing, not [with] one another bullying, changing [the] world [to be] pure [and] harmonious, together ascending [with] benevolence [and] longevity. And in this Southern Jambudvīpa, completely [in] this Sahā World and [the] ten directions’ defiled [and] evil worlds, [with] bodies as countries’ kings, great officials, hundreds [of] officials [and] directors [of] numerous [officials], with these [as] those officials having positions, teaching [and] transforming sentient beings, [to] together cultivate [the] Buddha path, liberating [and] departing [from] suffering’s ocean, then changing my world, down to [the] ten directions’ defiled [and] evil worlds, [with] all becoming [the] Pure Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss.’ Prostrate.
([An] ancient version [of the Lóngshū Pure Land] Text says, ‘[On] Yányòu’s Yǐmǎo [year’s] [i.e. 1315 C.E.] fourth month’s fourteenth day, [there was an] order [for a] craftsman [to carve its] printing boards. Reaching [the] tenth [lunar] month’s first night, [when carving of] printing [boards] reached this board, [it] produced one piece [of] śarīra. [On the] seventh [lunar] day, [when carving of] printing [boards] reached [the] word “Dharma” above, [it] also produced one piece [of] śarīra. [On] Xiàyuán Day [i.e. the fifteenth day of the tenth lunar month], [when carving of] printing [boards] reached [the] word “noble” above, also appeared one piece [of] śarīra. Presently retained within [the] boards, [this is for] preserving [them], for making offerings said. Wholeheartedly hoping [that] those [who] view this text, gaze [at] these [as] efficacious proof, [to] together give rise [to the] mind of profound Faith [with] firmness. Entreating [them to] follow [it], permeating [with] cultivation, [for] definite birth [in] Pure Land. [This] is then [that] Layperson Lóngshū so-called, ‘From ancient [times], coming to today, [with] those practising [this] many, how [can they be] without connection [with] response?’ These words [can be] believed without error.)
If not eating meat, this is great good. If having sickness, [and] unavoidably eating threefold pure meat, then [with this] prayer saying, [4] ‘Disciple so-and-so, because of [this] body [in the] world’s net, [with] past karma deep [and] heavy thus, [with] internal organs [and] body weak, unavoidably sometimes eating threefold pure meat, sincerely for yesterday, that eaten meat of sentient beings, recite ‘Námó Xīfāng Jílèshìjiè Sānshíliùwàn Yì Yīshíyīwàn Jiǔqiān Wǔbǎi Tóngmíng Tónghào Āmítuófó’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in the) Western Land (Of) Ultimate Bliss’ three hundred (and) sixty thousand (360,000) koṭis (of) one hundred (and) nineteen thousand five hundred (119,500) similarly named (and) similarly titled Amitā(bha) Buddha’] seven [of] seven [i.e. 49] times. Relying only [on the] Thus Come [One’s] great loving-kindness [and] great compassion, specially extending [his] majestic supernormal [powers], exactly the same [for] these sentient beings, personally relinquishing body [and] life, together with those reciting, hoping for [those] reciting, giving [and] offering their bodies, [to be] definitely pulled up [and] ferried, [to be] born [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss. So-and-so vows, [for] those, [having] eaten their meat, [by] those given strength, [for] those doing good karma, wishing [to be] with this [and] other sentient beings, sharing [it with] them, wishing this [and] other sentient beings, [those] first born [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss, [to] wait [for] so-and-so [to be] born [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss, [to] see [the] Buddha [and] hear [the] Dharma, [and] realise [the] six supernormal [powers], when coming [to] this Southern Jambudvīpa [to] transform [and] deliver sentient beings, [for] this [and] other sentient beings, all thereupon then coming, together transforming sentient beings, [to] together ascend [on the] Buddha’s path.’ Prostrate.
[Note 12: Nowadays, many vegan foods are readily available for treatment of sicknesses, which makes meat-eating optional.
Note 13: Threefold pure meat is that from animals not seen, heard and suspected to be killed for oneself. This is actually very difficult to find, as purchased meat is beyond doubt supplied for its consumers, thus going against the last condition. It is thus best to avoid eating meat entirely.
Note 14: As ‘Āmítuófó’ literally means ‘Immeasurable Buddha(s)’ (无量佛), his name already can represent all Buddhas collectively, in terms of the one Dharma Body (法身) (shared by all Buddhas), which encompasses innumerable Buddhas’ Reward Bodies (报身) and their innumerable Manifestation Bodies (化身). If reciting with this faithfully, the meritorious virtues will surely surpass that from mindfulness of 3,600,000,119,500 Buddha(s) ‘only’. When weak on the deathbed, it is much more practical to only recite Āmítuófó with utmost sincerity, with focused Aspiration (愿) to reach his Pure Land.]
If not eating meat, then for clothes, of those worn throughout life, because of [the] silk, [and] because of [the] silk down of silkworms, and [those] mixed together with [the] silk down [and] silk of silkworms, [for them] recite like [that] before.
Also [with this] prayer saying, [5] ‘Disciple so-and-so, sincerely for this Southern Jambudvīpa, of today, those killed [and] those eaten sentient beings, recite ‘Námó Xīfāng Jílèshìjiè Sānshíliùwàn Yì Yīshíyīwàn Jiǔqiān Wǔbǎi Tóngmíng Tónghào Āmítuófó’s name one hundred [and] twenty times. Relying only [on the] Thus Come [One’s] great loving-kindness [and] great compassion, with so-and-so reciting [the] Thus Come [One’s] name, [with] one recitation, [with] one Thus Come [One] coming [to] deliver one sentient being, completing this number of recitations, (The ancient board [at] this place produced śarīra) likewise thus, completely delivering sentient beings [to be] born in [the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss.’ Prostrate.
