第四卷:修持法门十五篇
[4] Fourth Scroll: Fifteen Essays [On] Practices’ Dharma Doors

净土法门,多见于《大阿弥陀经》与《十六观经》,有浅有深。浅者其功小,而于九品中卑;深者其功大,而于九品中高。

[On] Pure Land [practices’] Dharma doors, many [can be] seen in [the] Great Amitā Sūtra and [the] Sixteen Contemplations’ Sūtra , having [those] simple [and] having [those] profound. [Of] those simple, their merits [are] small, and within [the] nine grades low. [Of] those profound, their merits [are] great, and within [the] nine grades high.

然皆脱离轮回,长生不老。 今先列其浅者,次及深者,盖随人所修也。

However, all [are] liberated [and] departed [from] rebirth, [with] long life without ageing. Now first listing those simple, next reaching those profound, covering accordingly, [for] people, [with] that [for] cultivation.

修持法门一
[1] First [Essay On] Practices’ Dharma Door

【阿弥陀佛四十八愿中…】
[Amitā(bha) Buddha’s Forty-Eight Vows Within…]

阿弥陀佛四十八愿中,有一愿云:「我作佛时,十方众生,至心信乐,欲生我国,十声念我名号,而不生者,我不作佛。」

Amitā[bha] Buddha’s forty-eight vows within, has a vow saying, ‘When I become [a] Buddha, [if the] ten directions’ sentient beings, [with the] sincere mind [and] joyful Faith, desire [to be] born [in] my land, [with] ten recitations mindful [of] my name, yet [have] those not born, I [shall] not become [a] Buddha.’

是此佛自有誓愿度人,唯假人之十念以表归依之心。

This is [the] Buddha personally having [the] vow [to] deliver people. Only if people [have] those ten recitations, with [them] expressing [the] mind [of] taking refuge, [is this possible].

每日早晨,合掌向西顶礼,念南谟阿弥陀佛十声。

Every day [in the] early morning, [with] joined palms towards [the] West prostrate, recite ‘Námó Āmítuófó’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) Amitā(bha) Buddha’] [with] ten recitations.

复顶礼念大慈菩萨《发愿偈》一遍云:

Again prostrating, recite Great Loving-Kindness Bodhisattva’s Verse [For] Making Vows one time, saying,

「愿同念佛人,
共生极乐国。
见佛了生死,
如佛度一切。」

‘May [I], together [with] people mindful [of the] Buddha, [be] together born [in the Pure] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss. Seeing [the] Buddha, liberating [from] birth [and] death, like [the] Buddha, delivering all.’

复顶礼而退。至诚如此,无不往生。但恐九品中不高耳。

Again prostrating then retreating. [With] utmost sincerity like this, [it is] without [those] not reborn [there]. Only fearing [that of the] nine grades within, [with one] not high.

如不识字人,教念此偈,得大福报。

If [for] people not knowing words, teaching [to] recite this verse, [this also] attains great blessed rewards.

[2] Second [Essay On] Practices’ Dharma Door

【每日早晨…】
[Every Day (In The) Early Morning…]

每日早晨,合掌向西顶礼,念「南谟阿弥陀佛」、「南谟观世音菩萨」、「南谟大势至菩萨」、「南谟一切菩萨声闻诸上善人」,各十声。

Every day [in the] early morning, [with] joined palms towards [the] West prostrate, recite ‘Námó Āmítuófó’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) Amitā(bha) Buddha’], ‘Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) Contemplator (Of The) World’s Sounds Bodhisattva’], ‘Námó Dàshìzhì Púsà’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva’] [and] ‘Námó Yīqiè Púsà Shēngwén Zhūshàngshànrén’ [i.e. ‘Homage to (and) refuge for life (in) all Bodhisattvas, Voice-Hearers (and) all superior good persons’], each [with] ten recitations.

复顶礼念大慈菩萨赞佛、忏罪、回向、发愿全偈一遍云:

Again prostrating, recite Great Loving-Kindness Bodhisattva’s [Verses For] Praising [The] Buddha, Repenting Transgressions, Dedicating [Merits And] Making Vows’ complete verses one time, saying,

「十方三世佛,阿弥陀第一。九品度众生,威德无穷极。
我今大归依,忏悔三业罪。凡有诸福善,至心用回向。
愿同念佛人,感应随时现。临终西方境,分明在目前。
见闻皆精进,共生极乐国。见佛了生死,如佛度一切。」

 ‘[Of the] ten directions’ three periods’ Buddhas, Āmítuófó [i.e. Amitā(bha) Buddha] [is the] foremost. [With] nine grades delivering sentient beings, [and] majestic virtues without [an] exhaustible limit.

I now [take] great refuge [in him, and] repent [for my] three karmas’ transgressions. Altogether, [with] all having blessings [and] good, [with the] sincere mind, using [it for] dedication.

May [I], together [with] people mindful [of the] Buddha, [have] connections [with] responses, at all times appearing. [When] approaching [life’s] end, [with the] Western realm, distinct [and] clear before [our] eyes.

[With that] seen [and] heard, [with] all diligent, together born [in the Pure] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss. Seeing [the] Buddha, liberating [from] birth [and] death, like [the] Buddha, delivering all.’

复顶礼而退。此偈有大威力,能灭一切罪,长一切福。

Again prostrating, then retreating. These verses have great majestic power, [that is] able [to] eliminate all transgressions, [and] grow all blessings.

凡顶礼时,烧香作拜尤佳。

When [with] all prostrations, [also] burning incense [to] pay respect [is] especially excellent.

每日如是,必中品生。

Every day like this, definitely [attaining] Middle Grade’s Birth.

如教人念此偈,得大福报。

If teaching people [to] recite these verses, [this also] attains great blessed rewards.

修持法门三
[3] Third [Essay On] Practices’ Dharma Door

【一一念诵如前…】
[(With) Each (And Every) One Recitation Like (That) Before…]

一一念诵如前。唯念佛时,心想身在净土,佛前合掌,恭敬念佛。念菩萨时亦如此。

[With] each [and every] one recitation like [that] before. When only reciting [the] Buddha’s [name, with the] mind contemplating [the] body [is] in [the] Pure Land, before [the] Buddha [with] joined palms, reverently reciting [the] Buddha’s [name]. When reciting [the] Bodhisattvas’ [names], also like this.

念一切菩萨、 声闻、诸上善人时,则心想身在净土,其念诵声,遍于一切菩萨、声闻、诸上善人之前。

When reciting ‘all Bodhisattvas, Voice-Hearers [and] all superior good persons’, then [with the] mind contemplating [the] body [is] in [the] Pure Land, [with] that recitation’s sound pervading before all Bodhisattvas, Voice-Hearers [and] all superior good persons.

作拜时,亦以想在净土作拜;念偈时,亦以想在净土佛前合掌恭敬念偈。

When paying respect, also with contemplating [of being] in [the] Pure Land paying respect. When reciting [the] verses, also with contemplating [of being] in [the] Pure Land, before [the] Buddha [with] joined palms, reverently reciting [the] verses.

唯有佛菩萨像时,则不须如此,然须想其像,如佛与菩萨现身在此,受我礼拜,听我念诵。

Only when having [the] Buddha’s [and] Bodhisattvas’ image[s], then not needing [to practise] like this. However, needing [to] contemplate their images, [to be] like [the] Buddha and [the] Bodhisattvas appearing [with their] bodies here, [to] receive my paying [of] respect, [and to] listen [to] my recitation.

专志如此,其往生品第必高。

[Of those with] focused Aspiration like this, their rebirths’ grades [will] definitely [be] high.
