净土总要四
[4] Fourth Pure Land [Teachings’] General Essential

[(The) Sūtra Says…]
经云：阿弥陀佛历大阿僧祇劫，行菩萨行，忍力成就，不计众苦，常以和颜爱语饶益众生。
[The] sūtra says, Amitā[bha] Buddha, passing [through] great asaṃkhyeya kalpas, practising Bodhisattva practices, [with] forbearance’s power accomplished, disregarded all [personal] suffering, [and was] constantly with kindly expression [and] loving words benefitting sentient beings.
善护口业，不讥他过；善护身业，不失律仪；善护意业，清净无染。
[With] good protection [of] verbal karma, not ridiculing others’ faults, [with] good protection [of] physical karma, not losing discipline [and] rules. [With] good protection [of] mental karma, pure [and] without defilements.
手中常出一切衣服、一切饮食、一切幢幡宝盖、一切音乐及一切最上所须之物，以此施惠众生，令生欢悦，以行教化。故致无量无数众生，发无上菩提之心。
[From his] hands within constantly producing all clothing, all drinks [and] food, all banners [and] treasure canopies, all music, and all [that] supreme of their needed objects, with these giving kindly [to] sentient beings, enabling [them to] give rise [to] joy, so as to practise teaching [and] transforming. Thus, causing immeasurable [and] innumerable sentient beings, [to] give rise [to the] unsurpassable mind of Bodhi.
如是善行，无量无边，说不能尽。历无量无数百千万亿劫，功德圆满，威神炽盛，方得成就所愿而入佛位。
These such good practices, [are] immeasurable [and] boundless, not able [to be] spoken [of] completely. Going through immeasurable innumerable thousand million koṭis [of] kalpas, [with] meritorious virtues perfected [and] completed, [with] majestic supernormal [powers] blazing, then attaining accomplishment [of] that aspired, and entering [of] Buddhahood’s position.
是以十方无央数世界诸天人民以至蜎飞蠕动之类，无所不度。所以一念归依，遂生其国，皆于七宝池莲华中化生，自然长大，亦无乳养之者，皆食自然之食。其容貌形色，端明净好，固非世人可比，亦非天人可比。
Therefore, [the] ten directions’ endless numerous worlds’ all heavenly [and] human people, down to [to all] kinds of flitting, flying [and] wriggling [beings, are] without those not delivered. Therefore, [with] one thought taking refuge, thereupon born [in] that land, all in seven treasures’ ponds’ lotus flowers within [with] transformed births, naturally grown up, also without [needing] nourishing [and] nurturing of them, all [are with] eating of natural food. Their bodies [and] countenances, [are] upright, pure [and] excellent, certainly not [with the] world’s people comparable, also not [with] heavenly people comparable.
皆受自然清虚之身，无极之寿。遍彼刹中皆诸上善人，无有妇女，皆寿命无央数劫。皆洞视彻听，遥相瞻见，遥相闻语声。
[With] all receiving bodies of natural purity, [and] lifespans of limitlessness. Everywhere [in] that land within, [are] all superior good persons, without having women, all [with] lifespans [of] endless numerous kalpas. All [with] clear seeing [and] pervasive hearing, [of the] distant, [with] one another respectfully seeing, [of the] distant, [with] one another hearing spoken sounds.
皆求善道者，无复异人也。虽历万劫，己所从来，靡不知之；复知十方世界去、来、现在之事。
All those seeking good paths, [are] without again [with] different people too, [as all seek swift Buddhahood for one and all]. Although passing [through] ten thousand kalpas, [of them]selves, from where [they] came [from], not having [those] not knowing this. Again, knowing matters of [the] ten directions’ worlds [in the] past, future [and] present.
复知无央数天上天下人民以至蜎飞蠕动之类，心所欲念，口所欲言。
Again, knowing [that in] endless numerous heavens above [and in the] heavens’ below, [their] people, down to [to all] kinds of flitting, flying [and] wriggling [beings], that [their] minds desire [and] think, [and] that [their] mouths desire [and] say.
复知此等众生当于何劫何岁尽度脱为人，得生极乐世界。以其慧性通彻故尔。
Again, knowing [that] these [and] other sentient beings, should in what kalpa [and] what year, [be] completely delivered [and] liberated as people, [who] attain birth [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss. With their wisdom nature understanding completely thus.
