Who [Are] As Good Men And Good Women?
[Commentary]: [Of] those ‘good men’ [and ‘good] women’, ‘good’ has two meanings. First, are [those with] past lives’ good causes. [Another] one, are [those as] present life’s good persons. Those men [and] women, commonly point [to] monastics [and] laypersons, [the] sharp [and] dull, and [the] six paths’ all sentient beings [who] have [karmic] affinity too.
[Collected Writings]: [Of] those [with] past lives’ good roots, [the] Greater Version says, ‘[The] world’s people, those [with their] past lives doing good, then attaining hearing [of] Āmítuófó’s name’s meritorious virtues, once hearing [the] Buddha’s name, [with] loving-kindness’s mind [and] joy, Aspiration pure, [and] hair raising thus, [with] tears immediately flowing, perhaps [in their] past lives previously practised [the] Buddha’s path, or [are] other directions’ Buddhas’ places’ Bodhisattvas, [they are] certainly not ordinary persons.’ Thus, those [with the] faithful mind mindful [of the] Buddha, [are] all those [who have in their] past [lives] cultivated good roots too.
[Of] those [as] present life’s good persons, [they are] like [those the] Flower Adornment [Sūtra] says, ‘Rather [to be] in all evil realms, constantly attaining hearing [of the] Buddha’s name, not desiring [to be] born [in] good paths, temporarily not hearing [about the] Buddha.’ Those not with human [and] heavenly [rebirths] as good, yet with attaining hearing [of the] Buddha’s name as good, [are] then those [with the] faithful mind mindful [of the] Buddha, [they are] all good persons’ like-minded friends too.
[Of] those monastics [and] laypersons, [the] sharp [and] dull, [the] Pure Land Dharma Door, [with] all received [and] gathered, like [the] Greater Version says, ‘There [are] those [of the] High Grade, [who] renounced [the] household [life and] departed [from the] secular [to] become Śramaṇas.’ Likewise having those [who do] not renounce [the] household [life and] depart [from the] secular, then [are there] monastics’ five assemblies [of Bhikṣus (比丘), Bhikṣuṇīs (比丘尼), Śrāmaṇeras (沙弥), Śrāmaṇerikās (沙弥尼) and Śikṣamāṇās (式叉摩那), and] householders’ two assemblies [of Upāsakas (优婆塞) and Upāsikās (优婆夷), of] those only mindful [of the] Buddha, together attaining rebirth, [this] is common [for] monastics [and] laypersons.
Also, [of the] lotus divisions’ Nine Grades, [those] above should [be] abundantly virtuous Bodhisattvas, [with those] below then [being] unhurried ordinary beings, and even evil persons [and] others, [of] those only mindful [of the] Buddha, likewise attaining rebirth, [this] is common [for the] sharp [and] dull.
Also, ghosts, animals, hell-beings, [the] strong [and] weak, females [and] males, [they] likewise can all [be] named [as] ‘men’ [and] ‘women’, [of] those only mindful [of the] Buddha, together attaining rebirth, [this] is common [for] all sentient beings too.
[In the] Rebirth Collection within, studying [the] ancient [to] examine [the] present, perhaps conveying a few [cases of each, those who] wish [to, can] detailedly look [into] this.
