I1: Birds’ Sounds’ Dharma Benefits
[Sūtra]: Furthermore, Śāriputra, that land constantly has all kinds [of] rare [and] wonderful birds of mixed colours – White Cranes, Peacocks, Parrots, Śāris, Kalaviṅkas, [and] Life-Sharing Birds. All these many birds, day and night, [during the] six periods, produce harmonious [and] elegant sounds. Their sounds smoothly explain [the] Five Roots, Five Powers, Seven Bodhi Factors, Eightfold Noble Path Factors [and] other such Dharma. That land’s sentient beings, [having] heard these sounds already, all [become] mindful [of the] Buddha, mindful [of the] Dharma [and] mindful [of the] Saṃgha.
[Explanation]: [Those] ‘all kinds [of] rare [and] wonderful birds of mixed colours’ said, [are] many [and] also beautiful, [with the] below summarising six kinds.
‘Śāris’, [in the] past [are] called ‘Orioles’, Chán Master [Fàn]qí called these ‘Spring Orioles’, [which are] perhaps so.
[Of] ‘Kalaviṅkas’, these [are] called ‘Wonderful Sounds’, when yet [to] emerge [from their] shells, [already with] sounds transcending many birds’.
‘Life-Sharing [Birds’, have] one body [and] two heads, [with] consciousnesses separate [but karmic] retribution [body the] same.
[Of] these two kinds [of birds, the] Western Regions’ snow mountains [and] other places has [them].
All [these listed] rely [upon] those [in] this world loved [and] appreciated, speaking [of] these [as the] similar only.
[In the] six periods producing sounds, thus know [that the] Pure Land [is] not with birds roosting as night.
Virtuous [ones] with bodies of lotus flowers entrusted birth, [are] originally without drowsiness [and] sleep, not needing [at] night [to] lie [down too].
