[32] How Are Pure Land’s Birds Special?

【经】: 舍利弗,汝勿谓此鸟,实是罪报所生。所以者何?彼佛国土,无三恶道。舍利弗,其佛国土,尚无恶道之名,何况有实?是诸众鸟,皆是阿弥陀佛,欲令法音宣流,变化所作。

[Sūtra]: Śāriputra, you [should] not say these birds,really are those [from] transgressive retribution born. Why [is] that [so]? That Buddha Land [is] without [the] three evil paths. Śāriputra, that Buddha Land [is] even without names of [the] evil paths, much less having [their] reality. All these many birds, are all Amitā Buddha, [who] desires [to] enable [the] Dharma’s sounds [to be] propagated, [with] transformations [of] those created.

【解】: 征释可知。

[Explanation]: [The] inquiries [and] explanations can [be] known [here].

问:「白鹤」等非恶道名耶?    

Question: [Are the] ‘White Cranes’ [and] others not evil paths’ names?

答:既非罪报,则一一名字,皆诠如来究竟功德。

Answer: Since not [from] transgressions’ retribution, then [do] each [and every] one [of their] names, all explain [the] Thus Come [One’s] ultimate meritorious virtues.

所谓究竟「白鹤」等,无非性德美称,岂恶名哉?

[As these] so-called ultimate ‘White Cranes’ [and] others, [are] without [those] not [as] Nature’s Virtues’ beautiful names, how [can they be] evil names?

问:化作众鸟何义?

Question: [The] manifesting [to] become many birds [has] what meaning?

答:有四悉檀因缘:

Answer: [This] has [the] Four Siddhāntas [i.e. teaching methods] [as] causes [and] conditions.

凡情喜此诸鸟,顺情而化,令欢喜故;

[1] [As] ordinary [beings’] affections like all these birds, according [to their] affections then transforming, [to] enable joy thus.

[Note 1: This is the Worldly Siddhānta (世界悉檀).]

鸟尚说法,令闻生善故;

[2] [As the] birds also speak [the] Dharma, [to] enable listening [to] grow good [roots] thus.

[Note 2: This is the Individual Siddhānta (为人悉檀).]

不于鸟起下劣想,对治分别心故;

[3] [As] not from [these] birds giving rise [to] lowly [and] inferior thoughts, [to] cure [the] differentiating mind thus.

[Note 3: This is the Curative Siddhānta (对治悉檀).]

鸟即弥陀,令悟法身平等,无不具、无不造故。

[4] [As the] birds [are] thus [Ā]mítuó[fó, to] enable awakening [to the] Dharma Body’s equality, without [the Dharma] not complete, [and] without [the Dharma] not created thus.

[Note 4: This is the Supreme Truth’s Siddhānta (第一义悉檀).]

此中显微风、树、网等音,及一切依正假实,当体即是阿弥陀佛三身四德,毫无差别也。

These manifested gentle breezes, trees, nets [and] other sounds within, and all Circumstantial [and] Direct [Rewards] false [and] true, presently [with their] bodies, thus are Amitā Buddha’s Three Bodies [and] Four Virtues, not [in the] least different.

[Note 5:

Three Bodies (Trikāya: 三身):

(1) Manifestation Bodies (Nirmāṇakāya: 化身)
(2) Reward Body (Saṃbhogakāya: 报身)
(3) Dharma Body (Dharmakāya: 法身)

Four Virtues (四德):

(1) Purity (净)
(2) Bliss (乐)
(3) Permanence (常)
(4) (True) Self (我)]
