Why Have Proper Self-Restraint When Alone? 为何克己慎独?

欲学佛法,先须克己慎独,事事皆从心地中真实做出。

[If] desiring [to] learn [the] Buddha’s teachings, [all] should first [have] self-restraint [to be proper and] cautious [even when] alone, [of] everything, all from [their] mind grounds within truly doing [them morally and sincerely].

若此人者,乃可谓真佛弟子。

If [there are] these people, then [can they be] called true Buddhist disciples.

若其心奸恶,欲借佛法以免罪业者,何异先服毒药,后服良药?

If their minds [are] crafty [and] evil, desiring [to only] make use of [the] Buddha’s teachings, for avoiding transgressive karma[‘s effects], how [is this] different [from] first taking poison, [and] later taking good medicine?

欲其身轻体健,年延寿永者,其可得乎。

Desiring their bodies [to be] nimble [and] healthy, [to have] years lengthened [to be] lasting, [how] can this [be] attained?
