Question: When does the journey to Amituofo’s Pure Land occur? During the separation of body and mind, or during the bardo stage?
Answer: The ideal departure for Pure Land is to directly have the consciousness depart from the body. Less directly is to have the consciousness depart from the body first, to enter the bardo state for some time, before leaving for Pure Land.
Both cases are possible, while the first is safest, and the second potentially dangerous, as in the bardo state, one might be ‘swept away’ by the ‘winds’ of karma to be reborn elsewhere, before able to be mindful of Buddha to leave for Pure Land.
As such, ample guidance and support-chanting should be offered once in the dying phase, and overlapping to the post-death phase.
