修止偈
Verse On Cultivation Of Cessation
信愿持名，
阿弥陀佛，
无妄杂念，
即是修止。
[With] Faith [and] Aspiration upholding [the] name
[of] Āmítuófó [Amitā(bha) Buddha],
without false [or] stray thoughts,
[this] is cultivation [of] cessation
[i.e. Śamatha meditation,
with the subject (of and) for ultimate calmness and meritorious virtues].
修观偈
Verse On Cultivation Of Contemplation
亦闻所持，
阿弥陀佛，
清楚分明，
即是修观。
Also listening [to the] upheld [name]
[of] Āmítuófó [Amitā(bha) Buddha],
[with] clarity distinct, [from word to word],
[this] is cultivation [of] contemplation
[i.e. Vipaśyanā (Vipassanā) meditation,
with the subject (of and) for ultimate clarity and meritorious virtues].
