[132] Asking Termites To Move

与黄蜂及其巢穴的邂逅
[133] An Encounter With A Wasp And Her Nest
Āmítuófó. 🙏🏻 I would like to share my experience on how we avoided a potential hazard without creating more transgressions. In March of 2020, we noticed that a wasp was frequently flying around our kitchen, while seemingly stopping near its window. As nothing was particularly alarming, we just let it be.
A few days later, we started noticing small caterpillars on the kitchen floor occasionally. It was strange. However, we just thought that the wind might have blown them in. Looking back, they might have been food brought in by the wasp?
As the days went by, the frequency of the wasp(s) visits intensified, causing uneasiness to my domestic helper and children as it was near the laundry and toilet area.
Taking a closer look, I was startled to see that the wasp had made a small nest at the side of the window, with it getting bigger by the day. Contemplating how should I handle this, I immediately thought of Sis. Rosaline, who had not long ago, shared her encounter with termite infestation at home.
She had successfully, through sincere Niànfó (念佛: mindfulness of Buddha) and dedication of merits (回向功德), resolved the challenge without resorting to any killing. (Her written sharing was featured in the Buddhist magazine above.)
Thus, I decided to follow what she did. I wrote a letter to the wasp(s), pasted it next to the nest and sincerely read it out. I then placed all my hope upon Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛) through my daily chanting, followed by dedication of merits to the wasp(s).

My children were very sceptical, but I thought this will be a good opportunity to prove how Niànfó can solve the issue, with compassion instead of killing, with the latter not working in the long run.
In about a week, the frequency of wasp visits started to drop, before stopping totally. No knowing if there was still life inside the nest, I decided to seek Guānyīn Bodhisattva’s (观音菩萨) guidance, by asking after praying, and using divination blocks (圣筊). Approval to remove the nest was not granted.
We decided to leave it there for 49 days. Dedication of merits to the wasps became part of our daily routine after Niànfó. On the 49th day, I tried to seek approval from Guānyīn Bodhisattva again. This time, the answer was positive.
I then proceeded to remove the empty nest, with this marking the ‘perfect’ (圆满) end of our encounter with the wasp(s). This encounter reinforced the importance of compassion. It also let us experience the inconceivable power of Āmítuófó’s name (佛号不可思议的力量).
愿与此功德,庄严佛净土。
上报四重恩,下济三途苦。
若有见闻者,悉发菩提心。
尽此一报身,同生极乐国。
May these meritorious virtues adorn the Buddha’s Pure Land. Repay the four weighty sources of kindness above and relieve suffering of the three paths below. If there are those who see or hear this, may all give rise to the Bodhi Mind. And at the end of this one retribution body, be born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss together.
阿弥陀佛,阿弥陀佛,阿弥陀佛……
Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó, Āmítuófó…
