[134] How We Sent Off Hundreds Of ‘Alien’ Beings With The Buddha’s Blessings
One night in 2004, shortly after renovation, a bizarre long line of ‘alien’-looking insects was sighted, marching from outside our apartment towards our new kitchen cabinet, in the hundreds! They were bigger than the biggest black ants usually seen, looking so unfamiliar that we weren’t even sure they were ants. Even searching the net for clues got nothing close for identification. ‘What’ insects they were remains a mystery to this day.
As the insects were sizable and many, it was terrifying. We definitely did not want to do any killing. It was also strange that they were looking for a place to stay in a new cupboard, as there was surely no cavity or such. We did the only thing we could. We spoke to the ants sincerely, requesting them to leave as there is no suitable place for residing here, and that we are really fearful of them, of possibly accidentally killing them too, if they are to stay around.
Following that, we recited Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛) name aloud, to connect to the Buddha for his assistance to guide them, hoping they will receive blessings from hearing his name too. We even lit some incense usually offered at the shrine in the kitchen, hoping that its smell will deter them from staying. However, as the incense fumes were very lightly scented and thin, hardly drifting in their direction too, there was no effect.
After considerable repeated cycles of offering guidance and chanting, despite it becoming later and later that night, we finally turned in for bed, with a Buddha recitation device (念佛机) turned on in the kitchen, to help further connect the insects to Āmítuófó. Although there was much sincerity expressed, sleep was uneasy with uncertainty of how the situation will be tomorrow.
Next morning, I eagerly went to check. To my utmost relief, there were only three to four insects left. As they seemed to be walking around aimlessly, they were put in a plastic bag, before circumambulating with them around our shrine, with more reciting of Āmítuófó’s name. They were then brought downstairs to be freed in nature. We were really glad that this was resolved without any killing at all. Such is the great power of blessings from mindfulness of Buddha!
