畜生的中阴阶段多长?如何帮助它们?
How Long Are Animals’ Intermediate Stages And How Can We Help Them?
Question: Is the bardo (intermediate: 中阴) stage of short-lived insects and animals of the same duration as humans?
Answer: When a newborn human dies, despite not being even 1 day old, the baby can also enter up to 7 weeks of the bardo stage (i.e. 49 days) before taking rebirth. In this bardo stage, the consciousness is not always in the body, as it can wander around. However, the recently deceased is likely to be in or near the body due to habitual lifelong(/short) attachment to it.
Unless there are scriptural sources stating otherwise, it is safer to assume that the bardo stage’s duration is the same for various kinds of beings, be they big or small. When deceased beings are encountered, there should not be touching of them (which might create aversion due to magnified pain) too soon, or crying before them (which might create attachment).
There should at least be the offering of guidance (开示) as follows — ‘Recite Āmítuófó’s name (阿弥陀佛) sincerely, till you see Āmítuófó, to follow Āmítuófó.’ (一心念佛,见佛,跟佛。) This should be followed by support-chanting (助念) of reciting Āmítuófó’s name sincerely ten times, to set a motivating example — ‘Āmítuófó…’
