[97] Contemplate [Being] About [To] Fall [Into The] Hells, [For] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha [And The] Mind [To] Naturally Return [To Be] One
[If] mindfulness [of the] Buddha [and the] mind [do] not return [to be] one, [this is] due [to the] mind [of seeking liberation from the cycle of] birth [and] death not [being] earnest.
If having [the] contemplation of [being] about [to be] by water washed [away and by] fire burnt, without that [for] rescue, and [the] contemplation of [being] about [to] die, [and] about [to] fall [into the] hells, then [will the] mind naturally return [to be] one, without need [to] seek another wonderful method.
Thus [do the] sūtras within frequently say, ‘Contemplate [the] hells’ suffering, [to] give rise [to the] Bodhi Mind.’ This [is the] Great Awakened World-Honoured [One’s] most essential of teachings, [but it is a] pity [that] people [are] not willing [to] truly contemplate [and] think [about it].
[The] suffering of [the] hells, compared [with the] tragedies of waters [and] fires, [is] deeper [by] immeasurably boundless times. Yet, [when] contemplating [by] water washed [away and by] fire burnt, [they are] then terrified, [when] contemplating hell, [they are] then careless.
[On the] one hand, [due to their] minds’ power [being] little, [they are] not able [to] detailedly [know] all [of] its suffering matters. [On the] other hand, [once] personally [with their] eyes seeing [them, they are] unconsciously [with] hair standing [and] backbones chilling [with terror].
