净宗以往生为事
[148] [The] Pure [Land] Tradition [Is] With [Seeking] Rebirth [In Pure Land] Doing Practice

今既发心念佛，当以心佛相应，生前得一心不乱（欲得一心不乱，在心专注与恳切耳。见《三编·答幻修学人问》），报尽登极乐上品为志事。

Now, since having given rise [to the] aspiration [to be] mindful [of the] Buddha, [you] should [be] with [your] mind [and the] Buddha corresponding, while living attain wholeheartedness without [being] scattered (Desiring [to] attain wholeheartedness without [being] scattered, [it is] in [the] mind [having] focused attention with utmost sincerity only. See ‘Third Compilation’s Answer [To] Learner Huànxiū’s Questions’), [with this] retribution [body’s] end, [for] ascending [to the Land Of] Ultimate Bliss’ high grade do [your] aspired practices.

不必求其大彻大悟，明心见性也。

Not needing [to] seek that [with] ‘great’ penetration [and] ‘great’ awakening, [with a] clear mind seeing [one’s] nature.

宗门以开悟为事，净宗以往生为事。

[The] Chán Door [is] with [seeking] awakening doing practice, [while the] Pure [Land] Tradition [is] with [seeking] rebirth [in Pure Land] doing practice.

开悟而不往生者，百有九十。

Those awakened [here] yet not reborn [in Pure Land, in a] hundred are ninety.

往生而不开悟者，万无有一。

Those reborn [in Pure Land] yet not awakened [there, in] ten thousand, are without one.
