[149] [Be] Wholeheartedly Mindful [Of] Buddha [Without] Greed [To] See Buddha
Of [those] yet [to] before attain wholeheartedness, [they] absolutely must not sprout [the] thought of seeing [the] Buddha. [If] able [to] attain wholeheartedness, then [will the] mind with [the] path merge, [and the] mind with [the] Buddha merge. If desiring [to] immediately see, [then] can [there be] sudden seeing. [With] not seeing, also completely without that obstructing.
If hastily desiring [to] see [the] Buddha, [the] mind’s thoughts [will] flutter about. [With the] thought of desiring [to] see [the] Buddha, firmly forming [an] ‘aspiration’, then becoming cultivation’s great sickness.
[After] a long time, then [with] many giving rise [to karmic creditor] enemies, [who] ride [on] these impetuous [and] hasty feelings [and] thoughts, [to] appear as [the] ‘Buddha’s body’, hoping [to have] revenge [for] past grudges.
[With] one’s mind without right views, [it] entirely is [of] demonic bearing, once seeing [the fake ‘Buddha’], then giving rise [to] joy. From now [on, with the] demonic entering [the] heart, becoming possessed [and] going mad. Even though having [a] living Buddha, [he will] also not [know] what to be done.
Only [needing to be] able [to be] wholehearted, why [is there] need [to] in advance plan [on] seeing Buddha or not. [When] wholehearted later, [it will be] personally known [if it is] right [or] not.
Not seeing, [one is] certainly able [to have one’s] skills progress, even if seeing, [this is with] even more ceasing [of distracting] thoughts [for] focused cultivation. [This will] absolutely [be] without [the] mistake of misunderstanding, only having benefits of superior diligence. [The] world’s people [who do] not understand [these] principles, having [some] slight practice, then embrace expectation [of] exceeding [their] positions.
For example, like polishing [a] mirror, [with the] dirt if completely [cleared], definitely [will] bright light manifest, [that] illuminates [the] heavens [and] illuminates [the] earth. If not devoting efforts to polishing, yet only hoping [it will] emit light, [but] entirely [with] dirt defiled, if [there] is light arising, [it] thus belongs [to] demonic light, not [being the] mirror’s light.
[Yìn]guāng fears [that] you [might] not [be] good at [being] wholehearted, perhaps leading [to] personally losing [of the] good benefits [of mindfulness of Buddha, also with] retrogressing [of other] people’s faithful minds, therefore supplementing [with this] letter so.
[The Pure Land Tradition’s Sixth Patriarch Great Master] Yǒngmíng said, ‘Only attaining sight [of] [A]mitā[bha Buddha], why worry [about] not awakening?’ Now preceding those words sayinng, ‘Only hoping [the] mind [to] not [be] scattered, not plan [to] see [o] not see.’ Knowing this, [you] will [be] able [to] devote [your] efforts to [the] path of [having the] mind with [the] Buddha merging.
