情爱一起,正念即失
[195] Due [To] Passionate Attachment Once Arising, [With] Right Mindfulness Then Lost

有净业正因,再加以正信心自念,眷属助念,何虑不生?

Having pure karma’s right cause[s], again, [in] addition, with right Faith’s mind personally mindful [of the Buddha’s name (Āmítuófó: 阿弥陀佛), and] family members’ support-chanting, why worry [about] not [being] born [in the Buddha’s Pure Land]?

[Note 1: Pure karma’s right causes (净业正因) in their most fundamental form are the Three Provisions (三资粮) of profound Faith (深信), sincere Aspiration (切愿) and true Practice (实行): https://purelanders.com/2018/02/08/the-three-provisions. They are together expressed with mindfulness of the Buddha (念佛). More elaborate forms of pure karma’s right causes can be seen at https://purelanders.com/2010/03/15/three-acts-of-merit-true-causes-for-pure-karma.]

所不生者,由情爱一起,正念即失。

All those not born [there, are] due [to] passionate attachment once arising, [with] Right Mindfulness then lost.

[Note 2: If there is passionate attachment (情爱) to whatever not aligned with the Buddha for birth in his Pure Land, arising just before rebirth, since this is not mindfulness of the Buddha (念佛) any more, Right Mindfulness (正念) for connecting to him for birth in his Pure Land will be lost.]

勿道功夫浅,即功夫深,亦不能生。以凡情用事,与佛圣气分相隔故也。

Not [just] speaking [of those with] skills shallow, even if [with] skills profound, [they are] also not able [to be] born [there]. With ordinary passions handling matters, [is with the] Buddha’s noble vital power, separated [from] each other thus.

[Note 3: Thus, when approaching life’s end, oneself and family members should not fuss over mundane matters, such as those on inheritance (of money, properties and such), as the last thought before rebirth will be arriving, and it might arrive sooner than later, unexpectedly.

Mundane matters should ideally have been settled long in advance, in healthier days. Even if not, they should be settled 49 days after departure, lest the consciousness of the deceased is still around and is distracted by disagreeable settlements, thus not being mindful of the Buddha.]

[Note 4: Since the moment of death is not always the moment of rebirth, with the latter possibly arising within 49 days after death, there should only be sincere offering of guidance (开示) and support-chanting (助念) as much as possible, when dying and after departure (for 49 days).]
