Preface Section
如是我闻:一时薄伽梵在摩揭陀国闲寂法林,坐妙菩提金刚坚固无量妙宝共所庄严红莲华台师子座上,与十不可说俱胝那庾多百千佛土极微尘数大菩萨俱,及诸天、人、阿素洛等无量大众前后围绕。
Thus is [as] I [have] heard, [that at] one time, [the] Bhagavān [i.e. Blessed One] [was] at Magadha Kingdom’s Emptiness’ Tranquillity Dharma Grove, sitting [on] wonderful Bodhi’s vajra-firm immeasurable wonderful treasures, that together adorn [a] red lotus flower dais lion seat above, with ten unspeakable koṭis’ nayutas’ hundred thousands [of] Buddha lands’ extremely fine dust [motes’] number [of] Great Bodhisattvas together, and all heavenly [beings], human [beings], asuras and others immeasurable [in a] great assembly, [at the] front [and] back surrounding.

尔时,会中有一菩萨摩诃萨,名不可思议光王,承佛威神从坐而起,顶礼佛足,合掌恭敬而白佛言:「世尊!诸佛国土时分庄严,有胜劣不?」
At that time, [the] assembly within had a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, named Inconceivable Light King, [who] received [the] Buddha’s majestic supernormal [power], from [his] seat then arose, prostrated [at the] Buddha’s feet, [with] joined palms reverencing, then [to the] Buddha said, ‘World-Honoured [One, of] all Buddha lands’ time periods’ adornments, [do they] have [that] superior [and] inferior, [or] not?’
佛言:「善男子!我此 [1] 索诃世界释迦牟尼佛土一劫,于 [2] 极乐世界无量光佛土为一昼夜;[2] 极乐世界一劫,于 [3] 袈裟幢世界金刚坚固欢喜佛土为一昼夜;[3] 袈裟幢世界一劫,于 [4] 不退轮音世界极妙圆满红莲敷身佛土为一昼夜;[4] 不退轮音世界一劫,于 [5] 绝尘世界法幢佛土为一昼夜;[5] 绝尘世界一劫,于 [6] 明灯世界师子佛土为一昼夜;[6] 明灯世界一劫,于 [7] 妙光世界遍照佛土为一昼夜;[7] 妙光世界一劫,于 [8] 难超世界身放法光佛土为一昼夜;[8] 难超世界一劫,于 [9] 庄严世界一切神通慧光王佛土为一昼夜;[9] 庄严世界一劫,于 [10] 镜轮世界月觉佛土为一昼夜。
[The] Buddha said, ‘Good man, my this [1] Sahā World’s Śākyamuni Buddha’s land’s one kalpa, in [2] Ultimate Bliss’ World’s Immeasurable Light Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. [2] Ultimate Bliss’ World’s one kalpa, in [3] Kaṣāya Banner World’s Vajra-Firm Joy Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. [3] Kaṣāya Banner World’s one kalpa, in [4] Non-Regressing Wheel’s Sounds’ World’s Ultimately Wonderful, Complete [And] Perfect Red Lotuses Covering Body Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. [4] Non-Regressing Wheel’s Sounds’ World’s one kalpa, in [5] Surpassing Dusts’ World’s Dharma Pillar Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. [5] Surpassing Dusts’ World’s one kalpa, in [6] Bright Lamp World’s Lion Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. [6] Bright Lamp World’s one kalpa, in [7] Wonderful Light World’s Everywhere Illuminating Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. [7] Wonderful Light World’s one kalpa, in [8] Difficult-[To]-Surpass World’s Emitting-[Of]-Dharma Light Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. [8] Difficult-[To]-Surpass World’s one kalpa, in [9] Majestic World’s All Supernormal Wisdom Light King Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. [9] Majestic World’s one kalpa, in [10] Mirror Wheel World’s Moon Awakening Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night.
[Note 1: The above are examples of the relative experience of time in different worlds, with it being increasingly ‘compressed’ in the next. (Connected with time, space in terms of the big and small is also relatively experienced.) It should be noted that the only grades of lotus flowers’ transformed births (莲花化生) in the [2] Land Of Ultimate Bliss (极乐世界) that take kalpas (劫) are the two lowest ones – in terms of 6 and 12 kalpas. Although these time periods seem long, after time conversion, they are only experienced as 6 and 12 days in the Pure Land respectively. If those of these two grades do not reach this Pure Land, and fall into the hells instead, there will be experience of extremely long time periods of suffering, in terms of many actual kalpas. 「善男子!如是世界展转渐增,满十不可说俱胝那庾多百千佛土极微尘数世界佛土最后世界佛土一劫,于莲华德世界贤德佛土为一昼夜,于彼世界诸菩萨众修治殊胜普贤行地。
Good man, like these worlds, passing through many, [in] turn gradually increasing, filling ten unspeakable koṭis [of] nayutas [of a] hundred thousand Buddha lands’ extremely fine dust [motes’] number [of] worlds’ Buddha lands’, [to the] last world’s Buddha land’s one kalpa, in [the] Lotus Flower Virtues’ World’s Virtuous Buddha’s land, is one day [and] night. In those worlds, all Bodhisattva assemblies cultivate [and] eliminate [defilements, for] especially excellent Universal Virtue’s practices’ grounds.

「善男子!如诸世界昼夜渐增,如是诸佛寿量身相、菩萨世界庄严亦尔,由彼有情福转增故。
Good man, like all worlds’ days [and] nights gradually increase, thus [do] all Buddhas’ lifespans [and] bodily forms, [and] Bodhisattvas’ worlds’ adornments likewise thus, due [to] those sentient [beings’] blessings, [in] turn increase thus.
[Note 3: As Buddha lands’ time periods increase and decrease according to sentient beings’ blessings, in this sense, they are none superior or inferior to another.]
「若有善男子、善女人闻此『显示无边佛土功德法门』欢喜信重、受持、读诵、如理思惟、广为他说,临命终时,十方佛土无量诸佛皆现其前,慰喻赞美,令其增进无量善根,随愿往生诸佛净国,乃至无上正等菩提,于生生中常忆宿命,修菩萨行速得圆满。」
If [there] are good men [and] good women [who] hear this “Revelation [Of] Boundless Buddha Lands’ Meritorious Virtues’ Dharma Door”, [with] joy, faith [and] reverence, accept [and] uphold, study [and] recite [it], according [with its] principles contemplate [it], widely for others speaking [of it], when approaching life’s end, [the] ten directions’ immeasurable all Buddhas [will] all appear before them, comforting, convincing [and] praising, enabling them [to] increase [and] advance [with] immeasurable good roots, according [with that] aspired, [be] reborn [in] all Buddhas’ Pure Lands, and even until Unsurpassable Right [And] Equal Bodhi, in life after life within, constantly recollecting [their] past lives, cultivating Bodhisattva practices [to] quickly attain complete perfection.’
[Note 4: As the name of Amitā(bha) Buddha (阿弥陀佛: Āmítuófó) means ‘Immeasurable Buddhas’, he represents all Buddhas of the ten directions too. With the Three Provisions (三资粮) of Faith, Aspiration and Practice (信愿行), with wholehearted mindfulness of his name, when approaching life’s end, he will appear before one, to receive and guide to his [2] Land Of Ultimate Bliss (极乐世界). Through this one Pure Land, according with that aspired, all other Pure Lands can be reached, for sight of all other Buddhas too, to make offerings to them, and to learn the Dharma from them. As one can only first be reborn in one Pure Land from here, and with this Pure Land being the easiest to reach, it thus makes sense to first choose this Pure Land. This is one of the excellent reasons why all Buddhas will teach to urge birth there, as exemplified in the Amitā(bha) Sūtra《阿弥陀经》.]

时薄伽梵说此经已,不可思议光王菩萨摩诃萨并诸天、人、阿素洛等一切众会,闻佛所说,皆大欢喜,信受奉行。
Then, [after the] Bhagavān [has] spoken this sūtra already, Inconceivable Light King Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, together [with] all heavenly [beings], human [beings], asuras [and] others, all [in the] assembly, hearing that [the] Buddha said, all [had] great joy, [as they] faithfully accepted [to] practise [it].
