菩提偈
Verses [On] Bodhi [Mind]
吾信愿念佛，发大菩提心，此愿成大愿，能得生上品。虽大心难发，若能发此心，愿力更强大，更易得莲品。
[With] my Faith [and] Aspiration mindful [of] Buddha, giving rise [to the] great Bodhi Mind, [with] this Aspiration becoming great Aspiration, [this is] able [to] attain birth [in a] High Grade. Although [this] great mind [is] difficult [to] give rise [to], if able [to] give rise [to] this mind, [with my] Aspiration’s power even more powerful, [it is] even easier [to] attain [a] lotus grade.
他若未发心，亦信愿念佛，能得生中品，或得生下品。莫忘初发心，劝生佛净土，不逼发大心，即菩提心行。
If others [have] yet [to] give rise [to the Bodhi] Mind, [but] also [with] Faith [and] Aspiration mindful [of] Buddha, [they are] able [to] attain births [in the] Middle Grade, or attain births [in the] Low Grade. Not forgetting my initial mind, [is to] encourage birth [in the] Buddha’s Pure Land, not forcing [others to] give rise [to the Bodhi] Mind, [is] then [my] Bodhi Mind’s practice.
为劝生净土，先劝信愿行，后观察因缘，可否劝发心。强制发大心，若闻不欢喜，退愿生西心，违背此大心。
For encouraging birth [in] Pure Land, first encourage [giving rise to] Faith, Aspiration [and] Practice, later carefully observing cause [and] conditions, [to see if] it is possible or not, [to] encourage giving rise [to the Bodhi] Mind. [With] forcing [to] give rise [to the] great mind, if hearing [this and] not joyous, [with] Aspiration [for] birth [in the] Western [Pure Land] retreating, [thus] contradicts this great mind.
未发小发者，一旦得生西，花开必大发，圆满菩提心。蕅祖要解中，所以善巧言，深信发愿即，无上菩提心。
[Of] those yet [to] give rise [to the Bodhi Mind, and with] little giving rise [to it], once attaining birth [in the] Western [Pure Land, when their lotus] flowers blossom, [they will] definitely [have] great giving rise, [of the] perfect [and] complete Bodhi Mind. [The Pure Land Tradition’s Ninth] Patriarch [Great Master] Ǒu[yì] within [his] ‘Essential Explanation [Of The Sūtra In Which The Buddha Speaks Of Amitā(bha) Buddha]’, therefore skilfully said, [that ‘with] profound Faith giving rise [to the] Aspiration [to be born in Pure Land], is [the] unsurpassable Bodhi [Mind]’.
